Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

I'm thinking about apping here but I'm not sure what the actual game is like. Can any players give me some input? What's the pace/atmosphere/etc like?

there's usually one event a month split into two logs. these are usually places the ship makes stops (planets, space stations, etc) but sometimes events take place on the ship as well. events usually have slight horror and humour tones, with the occasional bit of crack.

there are usually a couple player plots going on as well, and people tend to be pretty open to getting others involved in them, even people outside their cast. for example, currently there's a truth serum plot kicking around in the background, some tensions between AI/everyone else, a transformer murder in the works, and a bunch of other stuff.

pacing used to be slower, these days it's fairly fast, and backtagging is expected. most players are very friendly, but some prefer to stick to their casts/specific interests (and that's fine). i've run into some people who had a lot of trouble getting threads and CR, and it seemed mostly that it was because they were playing OCs or LCWs.

to that end i find it helps to be proactive and tag out a lot when you're first into the game. it's way easier to get established if you're in a big cast. my LCW is doing fine now, but it was a little rough at first

app standards are low, the mods are flexible, and in general the game is very relaxed and low-key to be in ooc. i'd recommend it pretty highly, it's some of the most fun i've had in a while and there's a lot of freedom to do what interests you within the setting.

As a LCW that only apped in recently, I'm going to second what anon above me said. I'm finding it really hard to get CR and threads going, people seem to either want only those they already have CR with or some kind of OOC plotting done before they'll reply to open threads, and I'm honestly not finding it easy at all.

I am tagging out, but even that seems to be hard. Threads don't go for that long, if they get replied to at all.

It does seem like a fun game and there's a lot of interesting things to play with, but if you're not apping into a cast and don't have friends in game, it's generally pretty hard. That's my experience, anyway. It's disappointing, because the setting really is fun.

I'm sad to hear this, because as another LCW I actually fell into quite a bit of CR really easily and not with people I knew beforehand. Admittedly part of this might have been due to the nature of the character's job on the ship.

I guess my main advice would be to definitely hit people up with thread/starter requests! Especially poke your character's roommates and coworkers (it can be hit and miss depending on the player, admittedly), network posts usually get responses and then you can follow-up with those characters for more interaction...

As far as tagging out, it might be best to target other LCW or characters with small casts? Though there are definitely players from larger casts that are happy to tag with anyone! I guess it might just be a bit of trial and error and luck to hit the right players, but I hope you can find your footing soon, anon!

I'm sorry to hear you're having a poorly experience, anon. I'm going to flit around and see if I can hit up any LCWs on stuff personally, because no one should feel left out. I'm the kind of person who sees untouched posts and fidgets about correcting that, so I'll definitely keep an eye out for you. :)

hopefully i have a character you will have fun responding to.

anon above you

i'm sorry to hear it's been rough to get started for you.

admittedly i'm one of those players who prefers to have ooc plotting done first (it's been a busy couple of months and that helps me juggle thread-load) but if you'd like to play and feel comfortable doing so, feel free to hit me up on "sockblocker" any time. i'd love the chance for some new CR!

+1

OOC plotting is important to me too, but that doesn't mean I'm not down for spontaneous threads! I just do much better and focus more when I know the general direction we're going in, and admittedly this month's plot is much easier to get into if you already have established CR.

But I'm so sorry you haven't had a good time so far, and if you'd like to PM ihaveaseam maybe we can get something started? if you have a top level and don't mind a slower tagger, I'd love to make sav more fun for you.

That's a problem in DWRP as a whole I'm afraid. If you're an LCW, don't have friends in a game when you join, or are playing something they're, god forbid, canon-blind to, be prepared for people to turn up their nose at you.

And no, "just tagging out" isn't the magic solution people claim it is, as you've discovered.

pick better fandoms.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-11 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't listen to that person, play whatever the hell makes you happy. It's a big game now, so trying to weasel in CR is hard. It always takes me a few months in larger games to get something lasting.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 10:44 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a LCW and I'd say it's definitely harder to make CR than it is with a char I apped that has a cast, but it's possible. It's just... you know, harder.

I've found tagging chars here and there works, and if I like the CR a lot I end up breathing heavily on the player on plurk suggesting they should be friends and build the CR more.

I play a pretty obscure character and I've had a lot of luck. If you just want to play with MCUs or whatever other big popular characters are around, you probably have to work harder, but if you're open and you get your character out there, I think you can get a lot of CR going.
