for me what triggered it was the thing with trying to get her kicked out of school, and then she got mobbed and totally blamed herself. didn't both of those things happen with the same girl and cassandra clare?

i'm not doubting your claims that it was a different person/fandom, but god damn, that's spooky.

I haven't seen the CC FW stuff in ages, but if CC did the same exact thing wow that is fucking sad. All I remember about CC was some of the plagiarism debacle wank and the laptop incident. But like I said, BNFs thinking they could be hot shit original authors has always been a thing, and wankers trying to get people in trouble IRL has always been a thing, too. In all my years in fandom, I've seen people try it more than once. And I'm still not sure what Britney tried or how successful it was, so it's possible it didn't even do anything.

I can't lay down specifics but with what happened it'd be like if someone wrote a ripoff of Pern and got pissed that someone pointed out it was a Pern ripoff. It was more straight fantasy than YA, we were in a different fandom (though I'll give a hint that it was also a scifi/fantasy fandom, too), and I never saw it hit any wank comms. It also happened before I remember seeing anything with CC explode. I don't think it was that long before it because I remember starting to see things about CC not long after, but it was definitely pre-plagiarism debacle. Fandom Wank was created in '02 and CC's wank debacle really exploded in I think '06 and it definitely happened in between. (Maybe in '03 or '04?)

idk it's hard to remember everything now, especially since I deleted my original LJ and a lot of the forum sites are gone now so I can't go back to look. It's been over a decade. But honestly that is common BNF behavior. I can tell you that from observing. All the ones I dealt with thought they could be real authors but couldn't take crit to save their lives. Especially back then, a lot of fic writers harped on fic being real, legitimate writing and were extra snobby about it. I feel like attitudes towards fic have changed a little since then where people feel a lot less need to try to justify how it's real writing, just as good as original writing, and accepting it's fine as just a casual hobby without having being a real author as an end goal.
