You sound fat

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

show of hands, do you any of you guys still use aim

and why do you use aim instead of skype

(Anonymous) 2016-05-04 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
the ability to remove/dock the screen, individualize conversations, and it takes up less ram (a lot less).

there's a lot of reasons and it's mostly that and i don't want to voice chat or make excuses not to do that/vid chat. i also think it's too clunky. i know aim is pretty monstrous and ugly too but i use a slightly older version that's a little more "clean".

I use trillian, which connects to an aim account. Does that count?

everyone I know uses it. the UI isn't bad. I just wish they'd do away with the irritating pop-ups begging for subscriptions

(Anonymous) 2016-05-04 12:05 pm (UTC)(link)
trillian is still around? man, that's a blast from the past. did they end up fixing the ui? it used to be ugly as sin.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-04 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's not too bad to look at and fairly easy to navigate these days. I wouldn't call it slick but it does the job

(Anonymous) 2016-05-04 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
skype crashes my computer and bugs out if i try to scroll up in conversation

(Anonymous) 2016-05-04 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
skype is a gigantic resource hog that makes my computer run uncomfortably hot, and i have no interest in letting anyone hear my voice or see my face anyway.

third party aim clients are pretty good, really. this one autologs my chats for me. it also takes up a lot less screen real estate than skype.

i've been talking to a handful of people daily on aim for years now and will probably continue to do so until it breaks.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-04 12:01 pm (UTC)(link)
aim via adium because i like changing the colors of the windows and i like my username

(Anonymous) 2016-05-04 12:51 pm (UTC)(link)
i use pidgin, an aim client, for similar reasons others have given -- skype is a huge resource hog and buggy to boot.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-04 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
AIM via trillian, I like it better. Transparency, docking to side of screen, etc

(Anonymous) 2016-05-04 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I use AIM via Pidgin because it isn't plastered with huge, ugly ads and never needs to update, as opposed to constantly needing to update.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-04 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
AIM via Trillian because it happens to be what people I talk to regularly use

(Anonymous) 2016-05-04 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
i use skype on my phone, but i can't even open it on my computer without everything going to hell. aim is pretty smooth sailing on the other hand

(Anonymous) 2016-05-04 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
yes

because i'm a creature of habit and because skype is way uglier and takes more memory than my third party aim client. also i feel like people could surprise me with video or voice calls and i'm not about that

+1

i tried using skype as a merely text base messaging system, but i got rid of it after the ten millionth time someone asked me if they could have a voice or video chat with me.

no, no you can't. i don't have a microphone, and i specifically have chosen not to get one. same with a webcam. i'm an extremely private person. i don't go putting my face and voice out there. i prefer text conversation and i find it really irritating that people don't take no for an answer.

i use AIM purely for RP reasons. my skype is connected to IRL things and i don't need that kind of irl/online bleed.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-05 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
is there like a pidgin for skype? a lite version that only allows text communication? someone needs to do this asap, i'll pay you good money.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-05 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
nope. there were some, but then microsoft acquired skype and killed all third party clients.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-05 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I use AIM via Pidgin partially out of habit and because the people I talk to most frequently also use it. It still works perfectly for what I need it for, so I don't have any reason to switch. For people I need to get in contact with that don't use AIM, there's Plurk, which most people prefer.

Skype is a terrible text messenger and I hate its UI. I only use it for voice chat and only get on it by request.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-07 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, because I'm in one of the few games still around to have an active chat. And I wouldn't trade it for the world.

Skype is a resource hog, and I have no desire to use voice/video like. Ever.
