public defender/criminal lawyer/lawyer in general

favorite part of your job and least favorite part of your job. how did you get started in this area of practice?

Favorite part: the clients. Least favorite part: the court system.

Most of them are genuinely okay people just trying to figure shit out. I like most of them, and the vast majority is stupid and petty shit that honestly doesn't deserve jail time (reckless driving, which in Virginia most of the time means 1) you had an accident and the officers charged you without bothering to find out what happened, or 2) you drove over 80 mph; possession of marijuana; driving on a suspended license). These kinds of charges can ruin someone's record and their job and then their life, and you're the person who stands in between them and that. It's powerful, and being the person who is trusted with that is just insanely rewarding and uplifting sometimes.

Least favorite is the court system. Prosecutors offer deals based on the criminal record of the defendant and what the officer involved wants to do; it's all mechanical, they don't give a shit. The judges often don't give a shit. You don't get enough time with all your clients. And it's all racist in ways that seem subtle or silly to get upset about individually, but that add up to most of my clients being black and my black clients getting way worse consequences than my white ones. It's frustrating, and it's awful. Sometimes it makes me want to give up. But if I give up, who's going to be out here giving a shit? (If you want specifics about this, ask; I don't want to do my lengthy racism-in-the-courts rant just randomly.)

I knew this was where I want to be all through law school and I didn't waver once. Poor people get a terrible deal in life and I think there's something inherently more virtuous in defending poor people who don't pay you than defending rich people who pay you tens of thousands of dollars. Rich people don't need my help. Poor people do.
