WHAT COUNTRIES HAVE YOU TRAVELED TO/WHICH COUNTRIES WOULD YOU WANT TO TRAVEL TO?
(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)convince me to travel to new places, anons. any country counts as interesting, even if it's the us.
Re: WHAT COUNTRIES HAVE YOU TRAVELED TO/WHICH COUNTRIES WOULD YOU WANT TO TRAVEL TO?
(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)- America (California, Texas, Florida, Louisiana, New York (NYC is one of my three favourite cities in the world), Oregon, Ohio)
- Canada (where I live in Saskatchewan. Have also been to Ontario, Alberta, BC)
- England, which was wonderful. Because of the music and the wonderful people I've met, London is probably my favourite destination. Also visited the pub that Tolkien and CS Lewis used to meet up in every Tuesday, so that was a lot of fun. Lot's of pretty country as well, and it's surrounded by ocean!
- France, which has the catacombs! Even though I've never been. Also kind of a great place with some fantastic food and beautiful artwork and other sights.
- Italy. Beautiful architecture, delicious food, and Venice is one of my favourite cities.
- Germany. Didn't have much time here but I wish I could go back.
- Jamaica. Beautiful and hot. I was only there for a day, but I went ziplining through the rainforest, went tube rafting down a river, took a bit of a tour of a rum place where there were rum samples. The beaches are beautiful, but because of the economy the vendors are very persistent and annoying if you just chill out there.
Monaco - Since it's a city-state, it's super expensive so I wouldn't recommend staying over night or anything, but it's still pretty great and they have delicious chocolate. If you go to France I'd recommend taking a side trip to Monaco.
Places I want to go:
Japan. I'd love to see some cherry blossoms, though I know Golden Week is the most touristy time to go to Japan and likely the most expensive. But they've also got indoor skiing which I've always wanted to try, beautiful architecture, lots of history, etc. And tons of interesting and bizarre food that I want to stuff in my mouth.
Peru. I'd love to see Machu Picchu.
Brazil. I have a friend who lives there and it seems like a great country to go to.
The Scandinavian Countries. In particular Norway, but I'd also love to go to Sweden for some snowboarding. Also has lots of great music. And just in general a place I've always wanted to go.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)also the national zoo is awesome and arlington cemetery was also an interesting visit although that one might not mean as much if you're not from the US
Re: WHAT COUNTRIES HAVE YOU TRAVELED TO/WHICH COUNTRIES WOULD YOU WANT TO TRAVEL TO?
(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)- America: like allll over the fricken place. Live here and have roadtripped up the East coast, across the Gulf of Mexico, from the gulf coast up to Illinois, if you want to know about a state in the central or easter time zone, I can probably tell you what it's like. highlights of the various road trips include White Sands National Park (BIGASS naturally occurring sand dunes, so much fun to play in), the Ozark mountain area (just so beautiful), New Orleans for food, and this awesome/awful massive truck stop complex called South of the Border which is so tacky, I adore it so much.
- Canada: for thirty minutes, just so we could say we did, I bought socks
- United Kingdom: did a study abroad there for a semester. lived in Norwich, which was a shithole, but a shithole that was bigger than my college town undergrad so I loved it. visited London & Cardiff, both of which were lovely cities to visit that I would not want to live in at all. Cardiff has a ballin' castle.
- Germany: visited bestie who was doing her stud abroad in Minsk. didn't get to do much as it was Easter weekend and everything was closed, we had some surprisingly decent Mexican food
- Italy: went to Rome for a week a while back. Absolutely beautiful, enjoyed touring the city, you really get a sense of how much HISTORY is in Rome. The food was DELICIOUS, especially the gelato. Unfortunately got a major bronchial infection about halfway through the trip so spent about 1/3 of the time in the hotel
- Vatican City: they have very lovely service elevators that you can use when said bronchial infection makes you puke in a museum. Also, going to mass in St. Peter's Basilica is very cool until you get to the homily which is less cool if you don't speak Italian
countries that I'd like to travel to:
- Canada again, mostly so I can do actual touristy stuff this time.
- France, mostly because I'd love to see Versailles.
- Egypt, specifically Cairo, mostly because I'd love to see the Pyramids & the Cairo Museum.
I'm a big ol'tourist, anon.

Re: WHAT COUNTRIES HAVE YOU TRAVELED TO/WHICH COUNTRIES WOULD YOU WANT TO TRAVEL TO?
(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)- canada (toronto and vancouver bc many times)
- mexico (various cities)
- japan (tokyo, kyoto, osaka)
- hong kong
- netherlands (amsterdam and some countryside stuff)
best food winner goes to hong kong with japan as a close second. my favorite place in mexico was sayulita, but i hear it's become really touristy since then. when i went it was this great little village without much english spoken. my favorite place language-wise was mexico, because everyone i ran into was delighted i was trying to learn spanish and more than happy to patiently help me out
i really want to go to italy and south korea above all else, but places like the bahamas, germany, jamaica, and literally anywhere in south america are on the list too. i'm pretty lucky and have family or friends in most of those places, so it's just a matter of finding the time and money.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-05 07:19 am (UTC)(link)- the US. Haven't seen a lot aside from the Midwest, hoping to change that soon.
- England. Went to Blackpool for a convention in 2007, then went to London for a few days.
- Scotland. Saw Edinburgh for the first time when I took a bus up on that convention trip in 2007, went back the next year on a 6 month working visa.
- Ireland. Extended my Scottish working visa with four months to work and travel in Ireland. Spent most of my time in Galway, but took frequent bus trips to every corner of the country and loved it. Galway has the best fish and chips in the world, hands down.
- Sweden. Studied for my master's degree here, but I also lived for about 9 months or so before that in a small town in the north of the country. I adored every second.
- Denmark. This was basically just to see Copenhagen with a friend, but it was excellent and I'd love to go back.
-Norway. Took a bus to Oslo and adored it. Only spent a night, would love to go back and do more.
- Finland. Another overnight trip with a friend, but Helsinki is gorgeous!
Would like to go to:
- Canada. I've never been and have a lot of friends there, and I'm in the upper midwest so it seems a little silly not to.
- Mexico. I love any sort of archaeology having to do with the place, and the culture just seems wonderful. And the food!
- South Korea. Mainly for the food. I sound like a fatty and that's fine, I am one. Most of my travel plans cewnter around food, really. Suited me fine so far. But the culture here seems very interesting too.
- Japan. Again with the food and culture, and I took a couple years of Japanese in undergrad that got me interested.
- Belize. Thought about going a few years ago but wasn't able to, would love to though!
- Egypt. I adore Egyptian history and would love to see the landmarks and museums.
- Everywhere, really!
Re: WHAT COUNTRIES HAVE YOU TRAVELED TO/WHICH COUNTRIES WOULD YOU WANT TO TRAVEL TO?
(Anonymous) 2016-05-05 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)-USA, cause I live here. Visited 17 states, driven through a handful more.
-Mexico. Tijuana, Cozumel, and the Mayan ruins at Uxmal. The pyramids were absolutely worth visiting and would recommend to anyone. The other two places were just tourist traps, but fun for vacations.
-Japan. Several times under different circumstances. Had a great time but I pretty much knew what to expect. I don't recommend going there on your own the first time, but rather having someone who's been there before as a guide because otherwise it might get overwhelming. That said it's probably the friendliest and safest country I've been to and has some great sights to see. Can get pricy compared to some other destinations, but the currency conversion is pretty easy to wrap your mind around if you're from the US because you can approximate 100 yen to the dollar.
-Taiwan. Fascinating country, but it cured me of any desire I might have to go to China because there were sooooo many people. The traffic was crazy (mopeds as far as the eye can see) but information in English wasn't terribly hard to find. Food was cheap and good and had a great variety. The National Palace Museum should be on everybody's bucket list, it's where they took a lot of China's historical treasures after the Communist party took power. I stayed in Taipei most of the time but we made a brief visit to some other places. Outside Taipei and Kaohsiung, it's better to have someone as a guide/interpreter because the level of information in English drops off dramatically.
-Thailand. Went for a destination wedding, enjoyed it immensely. The ruins at Ayutthaya are spectacular, as are a lot of activities in the interior. I liked those better than our time on the beach at Phuket, which was good for a party but I'm not a huge beach bum so it's easy to run out of things to do. Food and activities are extremely cheap and even fancy hotels are reasonable. The traffic was once again hair-raising but less terrifying than Taipei. Like Mexico, there's a lot of poverty. Like the other two Asian countries I've been to, prepare for it to be a cash economy - take what cash you expect to spend and do not rely on places being able to accept your credit card. (Hotels do, but many retailers and restaurants, even large ones, do not.) The food was even better than Taiwan's but the drinking water isn't safe so you have to buy bottled water everywhere, which is inconvenient. And it's hot. Hot and humid and not everybody has air conditioning. Would definitely go back.
Want to visit:
-Egypt. This place needs to become safe for American tourists again because I burn to see the Pyramids and the Cairo Museum and the Valley of Kings.
-Cambodia because I'd love to see Angkor Wat. If we'd had another week to blow in Thailand I would have included this on the same trip, but the schedule was busy enough I wouldn't have had time to enjoy it.
-Peru, Macchu Picchu. Are we sensing a pattern with ruins here? Look, I like these things.
-Somewhere in Eurpose, but my desire is nonspecific enough it's why I haven't been there yet.
