Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

I really wish no one was allowed to use the word thermodynamics seriously unless they've actually studied it.

Picked up a new character on a whim and I love them. They're a type that's been missing from my roster for a while and I hadn't realized how much I missed it.

I kind of want to play Valkana just so I can write an angry dude who tromps headfirst into the darkness and throws people through doors.

What's the difference between relating to a character (or seeing bits of yourself in a character) and soulbonding? Is it just the levels of creepy attachment or something else?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
now he’s all over wankgate and he’s cursing my name

‘cause i sent him a PM barrage all yesterday

hey, hey

soulbonding is believing you have some sort of otherworldly connection to a character, like believing they live inside you and can "front" (take over your mind and body for a while) or that you can speak to them via the astral plane or something

it always comes with creepy levels of attachment and delusion but it's possible to be creepily attached without being a soulbonder

Soulbonding has mostly been replaced by fictionkin ime except for here where we use soulbonding in the looser sense of just being invested to the point of unhealthiness.

In general relating to a character isn't a bad thing, but the difference between relating to a character and being really overinvested is usually in ic/ooc divide. If you don't believe you're connected to the character in some way, don't get insulted when the character is insulted, etc you're usually fine.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
the biggest red flag is when people start to take criticism of the character really personally, imo

if you're writing essays refuting or justifying a character's flaws instead of just accepting them as parts of that character, you're in too deep

I was thinking of giving Agito a spin too! Marco and Nagi too (good taste there). I have no idea how I'd do for icons though.

it's kind of a dick move to do it. what's the purpose? your curiosity, even if it's innocent (which i doubt), is not worth the chaos getting in touch with them will cause.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
soulbonding was a pre-fictionkin brand of craziness in which people believed they had an astral plane connection to some character.

it started being used hyperbolically/sarcastically in journal rp to refer to people who were really overinvested in their character being right about things, because soulbonders historically would flip the fuck out at anyone who implied their soulbonding had done anything bad or ill-advised

then people either forgot what it originally meant, or people who hadn't been around for the actual real soulbonders picked it up to mean overinvested

it's not weird to feel emotions about fiction. that's what fiction is for. crazy people take everything too far, fandom included, but irony culture's insistence that simply relating to a character is overinvestment is ridiculous and people who claim that need to chill out and go retake their high school lit class.

*who implied their soulbond, "soulbond" here being a noun for the character they thought they were astral married to or whatever
