you clearly don't get on memes much do you

it's easy to be insulated from the bleed-off in games because games usually (but not always) have an established circle(jerk) of core players who never leave and then a revolving door of more transient players. you stay in one game and get used to the core group, you think, "yeah, dwrp's doing fine"

but if you look at bakerstreet numbers now versus bakerstreet numbers a year ago the reality looks a lot more grim. partly that's just people leaving memes because of the rapidly plummeting chances of return on your investment, but there's plenty of people who don't join games and just ditch dwrp altogether

i think the distinction between casual gamers like ayrt and self-professed "hardcore gamers" is an important one to make

in my experience the hardcore ones are the insufferable cunts while the casuals are usually a sane bunch. the problem with so-called "moba" games is that they attract all the hardcores with a smattering of curious casuals for flavor. i've tried a few moba games, just because i have a friend who happens to be one of those hardcore gamers (and i'm sure i'd hate him like i hate all the others if we hadn't grown up together) who keeps trying to get me into them

vidya games are my main fandom and one of my biggest hobbies but i try so hard not to be A Gamer

"regressive left" is slightly more polite "sjw", and everyone has different standards for what counts as an sjw. for an alt-righter it's everyone left of ukip so they'll use it the most but that doesn't make it an instant alt-right signal, at least not without some cuckposting

as far as ghostbusters is concerned, a movie itself can't be regressive unless it's really ham-handed propaganda, but there have been a lot of politics surrounding the movie's reception that makes me raise an eyebrow. the way the avgn got shit on as misogynist neckbeard for not wanting to review it is pure regressive behavior

People are less likely to post in memes or even publicly because they're far more likely to get wanked on or harassed for arbitrary shit, too. We just had another game DOA because some anons got their panties in a twist.

yeah, the whole "everything is fair game for wanking on" attitude has not helped either. i haven't paid attention to game talk much because it's been years since i've been in one but it doesn't surprise me that attitude's extended to entire games too.

DWRP's definitely shrinking - new anon here, I do think it's "dying" but very very slowly, and hey, everyone's always dying very slowly. But why is bakerstreet a more important measure than games? If you go back a couple years bakerstreet was more active than now, but if you go back before that to the height of LJ/DWRP, it didn't exist in the first place. We were always centered around games foremost.

I disagree. I think memes, and drs before them, have long been the cornerstone of rp. think casual gamers vs hardcore gamers - which group do you think there's more of? which group gets more games made for them? bakerstreet, and memes period, are the successors of drs like sws and dear mun, back when people still used that. the thing about them is that there's no gatekeeper to them, any passerby can just jump right in and play, so they're immediately more accessible than any game. of course today i think the majority of dwrpers are in games, but i think that's also a sign of how we've shrunk. i don't think we'll ever "die", even the lj dr comms still get four or five comments a month, but i do think the dwindling bakerstreet scene is a bad sign. bakerstreet is to dwrp what sws used to be, the "hub comm" that any newbie can join and get their feet wet. it's seeing fewer and fewer newbies because of dwrp's unwelcoming culture, as someone else mentioned, and because nowadays hardly anyone tags anyone else back there anyway

i didn't either, but that's just because i didn't know about it. once i did i met many people who had, and more than a few who'd never played anywhere else

it's easy to think games are the center of the rp world when all you know are games

because we are dying. it's not like people are falling like flies, but where is this steady stream of newbies you're claiming actually coming from? who is happening to come along to an obscure website based on an obsolete social media platform that likes fandom roleplay? the only new blood we get are a) tumblr kiddies that get word of mouth from someone already rping here, or b) people lying about being new that want to start with a new identity.
