1. Yeah, a lot of people seem to be saying that it's better to have a few adaptable generic classes than lots of very specific ones, and I like that idea too!

Especially druids. Jeez, why didn't I remember druids?

2. I love the idea of the wizard city, especially the parts about being accidentally polymorphed - that could make for some really interesting plot hooks!

I like the religious hub idea as well, but I think it would be a good idea to have the holiday celebrations spread out across the realm, just so that they don't get too same-y.

1. being trans is more widely accepted in online spheres like tumblr, so actual trans people are more likely to feel comfortable being out on tumblr. you can probably count the decent canon trans characters on your fingers, and good luck finding one in your favorite canon-- so they turn to headcanoning their favorites as more like them.

2. social justice and representation are pretty hot and happening topics, and in an effort to seem more inclusive, a lot of cis people will jump on the trans headcanon train, too. sometimes it's genuinely well-meaning and they really do want more trans characters in media, other times it's just for bandwagon points, can't really make sweeping generalisations about this one.

ultimately, it's pretty harmless? a bunch of randos headcanoning some anime as trans doesn't really affect you.

RE: Generic Classes

Based on what you and the above anon have said, might it be a better idea to have all the standard classes, and then be able to customise them by upgrading specific skills? That way people have a lot of freedom to have their class fit their character perfectly, but I am a little worried that this will encourage power gaming.

As for the personality thing, I think I might have overemphasised how much personality will actually tie into a character's class - I meant to suggest that personality is as much of a factor as the actual skills and weapons a character has, so that characters who've never fought anything in their life can have as easy a time choosing a class as someone who plays their actual MMO character. Ultimately, it will be up to the player to decide which class their character is, so we can have characters who are hilariously unsuited to their class.

With what you and other anons have said though, I'll definitely revise the class descriptions so that this is more clear.

RE: Cast Limit/Multiples

That is something I totally overlooked, and I'm really glad you pointed it out! I was going to create a clause in which non-canon multiples of a character don't count towards the cast limit, but in hindsight I think I'd be creating a lot of unnecessary work and, potentially, drama.

So, would people rather scrap the cast limit completely, or just extend it? Personally I'm in favour of scrapping it completely, but I can understand if people would rather have it there just in case.

RE: Plot

What kind of plot would you have in mind? I have a couple of hooks of my own that I've been thinking about:

War of the Gods
This is the more fantastical option, but I'm aware that it's a concept that has could easily become overbearing.

The world of Socius is dedicated to many different love gods - gods for sexual desire, gods for platonic friendship, gods for true romance. For centuries, these gods have guided the realm into prosperity and happiness - but now the forces of hate have descended upon the land. Our heroes must work to defeat this evil - or, they may choose (or be forced) to side with it.

As the game progresses, the characters will come across various cults, shrines, and angry demons dedicated to a god (or gods) of hatred (and other negative emotions like fear, jealousy, etc. Think the Y'shaarj.) This faction will at some point become very powerful, and may even convince some characters that their way is the only way out of Socius. The cultists draw their powers not from the expression of love, but from the expression of hate, and by performing negative actions and creating a bond of intense hatred with another character, they will be able to draw upon that character's power.

The Bond of Hatred mechanic probably wouldn't come about until later in the game, but I think it would be a fairly decent way for villainous characters to continue to get up to some villainous shit, instead of having to settle into the SOL pattern.

Sword Art 69
The characters will at some point discover that the world of Socius is an MMO with an incredible immersion gimmick. The original players of the game were trapped within it, and because they were unable to defeat the final boss, ended up living their entire lives here. Before dying, they were able to go some way to 'hacking' the system, and in doing so managed to open up portals to other realms.

To escape Socius, the characters must defeat the final boss and end the simulation. However, the closer they come to doing so, the more 'glitches' appear in the world. These glitches will have interesting effects on characters, from changing their class to suddenly teleporting them across the realm, to switching their partner for someone they can't stand at a crucial moment.

I will say that I think this plot is a bit silly, not least because it relies on the idea that some crazed billionaire built an immersive MMO and trapped all the players within it for the purposes of watching people fuck.

Like that, but different.
A different option would be to have the same MMO plot, glitches and all, but at some point the characters discover that they are nothing more than characters created by players for the purposes of playing the game. Their memories of their lives outside the game are nothing more than a weird glitch that nobody anticipated.

Alternatively alternatively, while the players are under the illusion that their characters were created for the purpose of playing the game, the truth is that the characters were lifted from their respective worlds to serve as pawns for the players' amusement, or to feed some foul evil, or as a holding place for all these incredibly OP characters where they couldn't do any damage.

ALTERNATIVELY ALTERNATIVELY ALTERNATIVELY, all of the characters actually volunteered to play the game, in full knowledge of what it would entail, in their own universes. I like this one because it's an ebbin tweest that doesn't involve as much mental gymnastics, but I'm aware (because it was a major point in the first thread) that this might alienate characters who've never heard of an MMO before because they live in a universe or time with no computers.

Personally, I think that all the MMO ideas are a bit ridiculous, but they could easily be reworked into something that makes sense if people are interested in pursuing that route.

Emotional vampire cthulhu

The characters have been called into Socius from their respective worlds to feed a great evil that sleeps beneath the land. They are told that the power of their love enriches the earth and gives them magical powers, but they are in fact the unwitting pawns of emotional vampire cthulhu.

As lovethulhu's power grows, the effects will be felt across the realm. There will be tentacles. Strange shadows in the night. Weird cult artifacts (probably dildos) littering dungeons.

It will be up to the players during endgame whether they want to join the eldritch abomination and usher in a new age of horrible snuggles or if they want to use its own power against it and invite the wrath of the cultists that summoned them here in the first place.

Maybe they will have the option to join a different team entirely. I just don't know.

so yeah, there are some plots. Again, not overly attached to any of them and I feel like a lot of my ideas revolve around cults and cosmic horrors but that's what I get for going on a Lovecraft binge before coming up with any of them. Feel free to suggest amendments or come up with different plots entirely.

I've thought about it, but I really want to prevent people switching classes to ones that turn out to be more OP or have better class combinations or whatever.

I think the option could definitely exist, but it would have to be very difficult to do and possibly limited, like you said. It would either cost a lot of points, or might involve using a special and very rare item.

That said, there will be lots of other opportunities to change class 'involuntarily' so that people can play out different classes if they want. Most of these will be event-only occurrences.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
1. I'd suggest the following for generic starter classes: Fighter (branches into Warrior, Paladin, and Dark Knight), Acolyte (branches into Cleric, Druid, and Mage), Thief (branches into Bard, Rogue, and Hunter/Ranger), and Summoner (branches into Elementalist/Shaman, Warlock, and Necromancer)

I'm breaking up Warlocks and Necromancers because while there's been some overlap in recent media, the D&D definition of a Warlock is someone who makes a pact with a being from another plane to use their power. It can include faeries along with demons and other otherworldly creatures, and I think you can differentiate it enough from someone who forms a symbiotic relationship with spirits (Shaman) and someone who commands the dead by force (Necromancer).

2. Re: holidays, I think you could easily spread out small local holidays throughout the realm, but the religious hub might be the place to hold all the really big holidays - maybe one for each solstice, or in observance of a couple of the most popular gods. Other towns could hold their own versions of the major holidays, but their festivals might be smaller and less decadent than what the religious city pulls off.

doctor, then gyno. gyno's only good for vag specific problems, and if it's a uti or something along those lines... but even if it's gyno related, it's better to have a record of you going to multiple people for it on the off chance they blow you off.

bed wetting discharge, whether urine or vaginal, is something you need to check out. unless you're going to bed shitfaced and just not waking up and peeing yourself, it's a problem.

If you're having some trouble with character generation, don't worry! We're going to have a 'character brainstorming meme' alongside the TDM so that the community can broadly help each other with character ideas and cr.

And if you want a female character, consider reading up on Dornish culture and customs. Dornish women are broadly held in equal esteem, and unlike in all the other areas of Westeros, firstborn women may inherit family titles and estates.
