I don't know the game but from what I've heard others say, the crit giver seems to have a fair number of points. if they did go to the mods about it and the mods agreed it's possible they asked for clarification from the player or the player just decided that the whole "well we have different interpretations" was enough to say screw it

anyone who does know the game capable of giving those of us canonblind an agreement or disagreement on all of this?

someone who considered playing flowey at one point but didn't because of time constraints here, giving their hmd a glance over.

basically the first thing they say about him is wrong. flowey is absolutely not 100% incapable of real emotion, the only thing he is inherently missing is what undertale calls "love" - basically empathy for other people. he can be interested in people, he can find them entertaining, he can come to value them through other measurements of value, but he can't feel empathy.

i made a comment to this effect in the thread just north of here, but basically - rampant spoilers for undertale so i'm making this white text.

so, no, their flowey interp is miles and miles off, from the ground up.

Flowey being completely emotionless is a misconception that crops up sometimes because when he's describing his state he phrases it a couple times as not being able to feel anything. Now, IMO the context is clear that he's specifically talking about feeling anything about people, and in the same sequence he describes being terrified out of his wits and being suicidally depressed. I can see some wiggle room for interpretation on exactly how emotionally stunted he is, and just because of... his lifestyle his emotional landscape is probably something of a nightmarish wasteland regardless. But 100% emotionless is not what's in the game.

All of that being said, the accuracy of the crit isn't so much the issue here as the player's response to it, is it?

i can sort of understand how someone could interpret it that way but that doesn't make it any less wrong. he's emotionally stunted, not emotionless.

Truly, I think it's more the player doesn't really get the ramifications of a character being 100% apathetic. A character who has zero emotions would have no motivation to do anything and would actually require supervision to ensure they didn't get themselves killed and actually bothered to handle their basic needs like eating. Motivation requires wanting something and wanting something requires at least some emotion.

Most of the supposedly "apathetic" characters just have a very low level of emotion. They give enough of a damn to get out of bed, eat, and go about their business, but not much more than that.

Yeah, the quote they're latching onto is "I soon realized I didn't feel ANYTHING about ANYONE."

But then he goes on to explain that his compassion disappeared, and he ultimately fled to the ruins to see if Toriel could help him feel love again, and to care about people again. And his fear as he started dying is what woke him up at his "save" point. His whole speech in New Home during the Genocide route is filled with all kinds of different feelings, just that the majority of them are negative at best and nihilistic at worst. But they're still feelings.

The game even specifically says monster souls are made of "love, hope, and compassion", so it makes sense that these emotions would be the ones Flowey lacks. Not every emotion.

How was he gonna get bored if he couldn't feel boredom, anyway?
