the only character who ever got a real upgrade in their design was ema though (hobo nick not withstanding). idgi what else are you people expecting?

It's probably more jarring because it's been nearly a decade in game canon for Maya, while it's only been a few years for everyone else. She and Pearl really should have changed more.

I for one am glad they did not give her Mia boobs, so this design is okay by me.

I think you can give Maya and Pearl a pass just because they're kind of beholden to wearing Kurain robes -- especially Pearl, who's still an acolyte. As much as I think it would've been cool to give Maya Misty or Morgan's robes, Misty was more in a traveling cloak and Morgan was a dipshit. Maya's whole outfit is longer and flowier and just fits her better now, and I think the cuffs and the shawl do enough to separate her new robes from her old ones. Honestly, I wouldn't have wanted her character design to change too much. I think they put just the right amount of change into her.

pearl still didn't have to look like an eight year old, though. maya's design is nice but at the same time, we've seen other kurain characters in the trilogy and they don't necessarily have to wear the same thing

ema's AJ design was from a takumi/nuri game which is why hers was a drastic change. because they're the only two who know what they are doing

Honestly? He doesn't look his age. I was surprised to hear he's supposed to be nine. I would've estimated him as 12.

Which means Pearl has the same height and look as a 12 year old in my eyes. Still inexcusable.

I wasn't really expecting anything after DD, but I was hoping for something more than slightly different clothes and a bit more lipstick. I've seen some fun fan designs with her hair on a bun or something. Her model just looks... exactly the same as young Maya's sprites did.

i'm not as sad about the design itself, though, as the overwhelming sense that she will behave the exact same way she did at 17. i hated aj's stupid character developments, but the post-aj era trend of making characters completely stagnant for years on end is no better. god, the devolution of this franchise is depressing to watch.
