Rundown:
rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.
Rules:
Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-03 06:33 am (UTC)(link)but art school in the us at least is insanely expensive and scholarships are hard enough to come by that for most majors i'd argue it honestly isn't worth it. for design or illustration you can 100% make it without a formal four-year degree. past the internship stage, most employers won't care about dick but your portfolio anyway. and if you're freelancing, clients definitely don't give a shit
i will say that art school has been great for pushing my boundaries, and giving me experience in taking often harsh feedback and strict deadlines into account. but it's not the only way to get where you want to go, and i definitely wouldn't still be here if my specific field didn't care so much about having a degree.
if you do want to do formal training and your circumstances allow, consider looking outside the country. it was literally cheaper for me to move internationally and attend school than it was to go to the one in my hometown, even with their scholarships.
community colleges and online courses are also often great, and sorely underrated. but at the end of the day you really just need the drive to put together the portfolio and solicit feedback and keep improving on your own. for some people, school's the environment for that. for others it's not necessary.
if you're doing something highly technical like 3d modeling and animation, then yeah that's a different situation and one that instruction would benefit you for. those programs are insane. but even then, i know people who've taught themselves.
if you're looking strictly at fine arts rather than applied things like illustration, i would very strongly encourage you not to go for a degree at all and instead look for a la carte apprenticeship type courses. but that's just me
good luck, whatever you end up deciding on. you'll make it there. no one's on plan A.
