I don't have any canon characters or ocs, but the more I play the more I wish someone would make a dwrp game. imagining various fandom characters waking up as guardians is so much fun

unfortunately this is the only way a destiny game would ever work. i'd rather have it completely made up of ocs because i'm not a fan of au games, but you know how well that flies there.

but as long as i could actually app in one of my pcs from destiny, i'd be okay with it.

If I ran it I wouldn't do it AU? Characters would wake up like they do in the game, their ghost having found them in Russia. Only they're canon characters who have no idea how they got there. So I guess it'd be a jamjar set up, only the map would still be as huge (if not huger) than the destiny one, not contained to a small area or city or anything. They could take their jump ship and try to fly home I guess but they'd probably run out of fuel and die or something.

that's on the same level of "eh" to me tbh. i don't find the concept of any canon characters being in a destiny game very appealing, but my thirst is strong enough that i'd play in it anyway.

i'm probably sounding too stuck up about a game like destiny of all things but it getting the typical "you wake up in a mysterious place and don't know how you got there and you can't leave" treatment isn't appealing to me. between AUs and OUs, i'd rather go with AUs if i had to choose.

that said like you anon i'd prob play in a destiny game regardless of which kind of characters are allowed in.

would it change your mind if the arrival mechanic was more like this: http://rpanons.dreamwidth.org/63496.html?thread=196723720#cmt196723720

or are you just set on au only

i'm not really a fan of the "your character chooses to come to the game on their own" approach just because for a lot of my characters there isn't really a good canon point for that, but i do think that would work better than the character just waking up in the middle of russia. maybe they found an old vex gate and accidentally reactivated it somehow?

like i said tho i'd probably app regardless of whoever ran the game decided to do.

Yeah it's obvious that my interests sit squarely in OU characters being ported in by one mechanic or another, but on thinking about AU I'd worry about it making things too inaccessible for people not familiar with Destiny. Letting characters and players learn about the world through playing in the game is easier than expecting them to read up on it all enough to build an AU application. I mean, if I was running it I would definitely allow Destiny OCs as well, but OU ports seems like the strongest way to have it as a game in general.

A Destiny bud brought up the fact that this universe is incredibly dangerous for random people being sucked in. Could one just make a game where OU ports were brought in by Ghosts to fit the standards of a Guardian? Would that even make sense?

i think i understand what you're saying and i wish it could be like that but i feel like it wouldn't fly with a lot of potential appers? imo the ideal would be no characters under 18 and only ones who know how to fight, though i know that's pretty harsh for a dwrp game.

If it went the volunteer route then characters would probably have some idea they were being brought to help and how difficult it might be for them. Otherwise I think the format of the game and how it would translate allows room for characters to learn to be decent Guardians. We all start out at level 1 and work our way up to 40, after all, and I imagine from the popularity of similar elements in CDC and Eachdraidh that that progression would be a core interest for players in the game.

I would personally put in an age limit for characters though. Probably 16 rather than 18 just to remove the chance of smaller children trying to get around, but still allow for teen drama/shounen types who probably would adapt just fine.

i've wanted this so bad for the longest time tbh

I've thought about this a few times before and the consensus I typically reached was that people wouldn't show up to app, lol. I think what could work better is a sort of open musebox/dressing room that allowed AUs and OCs. I think AUs would fit more seamlessly into the setting and having OUs just being revived there would introduce a running theme where everyone wants to leave and I'd rather have a game that has basically the opposite (OTOH, the image of a bunch of OU characters joining Dead Orbit is kind of funny, Jalaal would be so pleased).

Honestly I think a Destiny game would have taken off if it managed to get in before the big space/sci-fi wave that swept DWRP last year, but alas.

I'm still more interested in OUs being ported in than AUs, and I think structure wise it would probably shape out the way eachdraidh was at its height. Characters would probably naturalize, but if you really thought the 'must get home' would be a problem, maybe take a route like the character was approached by the traveller in a weird dream and agreed to come help, or the traveller appeared at their canon world and they signed up to help that way somehow.

Sci-fi and space games have been running in ljrp and dwrp for a really long time so I don't think it's missed the boat. I've been hankering for more fantasy based games as much as the next person, but I still think a destiny game would be cool, and it has a fusion of sci fi and magic and mythology which would make it different and appealing.

I'd totally sign on to help mod this. I'm so into the lore of the universe and I think the factions and potential for player and mod plots would open up some really interesting interactions and doors to some great CR. I have way too much on my plate to spearhead that kind of thing or act as a head mod type in any capacity but it's a really cool idea.

I want to hear more, anon. I'm really curious!

Re: DESTINY

(Anonymous) 2016-01-08 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not really sure what you're asking, anon, but I've rambled anyway so here we go!

I think especially with the factions the plots would basically write themselves. Faction allegiance could be optional but you could potentially have activity bonuses tied to your faction. For example, if you're with Dead Orbit you could have a once-a-month activity bonus tied to Dead Orbit's goals - so, gathering enough materials to pick up and get the hell out of the galaxy. You wrote a thread at least x number of comments long that included your character actively scavenging or mapping out a route out of the galaxy? Here's x number of bonus points to spend on... something. Didn't really think that far ahead.

Or you could have mini faction plots based on the same faction goals. Maybe Dead Orbit goes on a mission to map out deep space and they accidentally find a lost house of dregs hiding out on one of Saturn's moons, so there's a battle and the drama unfolds from there. Or the New Monarchy decides to purge some Hive from Earth because they're getting a little too close to the City, but then they uncover a really mad, really powerful Knight hiding out deep underground and they have to fight their way out.

Basically you could really capitalize the RPG aspect of Destiny. There are plenty of personal goals in place for the guardians in the game, but we don't really talk about them too much because we're too busy shooting aliens or each other over and over again to get the coolest new guns and gear. Take that out and you realize what a good world it is to build your own story into, and how fun it might be for those stories to cross over. There would have to be some heavy modding and adjustments to the parameters of the world but I think it's got a lot of potential.

Sorry for being unclear! I'm only passingly familiar with the canon so I'm wondering if it's something that a newbie could join, aka someone who's canon-blind but likes the idea of a sci-fi RPG-esque DWRP game!

And, to be fair, this sounds really awesome. I'd join though I'd probably be spending most of my time on the wiki trying to make sure I had everything right. I hope you guys pick something up and run with it. I know at least one of my friends would kill for a game like this.

Re: DESTINY

(Anonymous) 2016-01-10 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly I think it'd be pretty easy to make it all accessible! The RPG aspects of the game are actually pretty shallow, like these factions could easily be described/explained with short blurbs on some sort of info entry for a DWRP game and you wouldn't have to omit anything that'd be relevant to gameplay to keep it short. Most of the lore found in the game's grimoire wouldn't be immediately relevant to the characters anyway, so it'd probably just be best to set it up as a sci-fi/adventure game with a touch of horror and give players the BG info as they uncover it naturally in the readymade maps and story lines. Obviously you wouldn't want to guide players through the shitty barebones story of Vanilla Destiny but if someone wants to go digging through the laboratories on Venus you could use the Vex experiments as a jumping off point for an interesting mod or player plot.

But like I said a couple replies up I'm personally way too busy to spearhead this kind of thing, I'm just a total nerd who has read every available entry in the Book of Sorrows and would be totally down to help.
