Unless they include an age up mechanic (which never actually fix the issue and just sort of awkwardly sidestep it) then that rule would cripple the game pretty badly.

there's plenty of teen canons where characters eventually turn 18, anon.

(off-topic but i've actually been considering starting a smut game with this rule, since i know there's a demand for it. i just don't know if DWRP really needs another smut game right now)

Even if you don't make it, pointers to smut games where +18 is in the rules might be helpful to me!

If you DO make a game with that rule, I'd love if it was as quirky and kind of adorable as SteamPowered has set itself up to be. I love pretty much everything about it other than this one thing.

and there are plenty where they don't/haven't yet. or people might want to play from a canon point where their char hasn't turned into an asshole.

this rule isn't brand new, you know. amat has 18+. so does eudio (with an age up rule). leaving a game with the possibility for underage is less common than not.

aging up is not 18+. amat's rule is also aging up. i've never seen a game where there is a hard 18+ rule with no age-up mechanic, which i'm personally not comfortable with because i've never seen it done in a meaningful way. it's almost always just "they're physically 18 now!" and if there is any kind of mental age-up they're never actually played differently.

as another anon said, age-up doesn't address the issue, just awkwardly side-steps.

Do you suppose that this is because games that have tried a hard 18+ rule in the past have died without getting much interest? I haven't been around long enough to have seen any, but someone above mentioned something to that effect and I'm wondering if it was spoken from previous evidence, or from personal preference.

hard to say. i haven't seen one try it in a very long time, or i'd have been on it like white on rice. but it's been so long since i saw it that i suspect the answer is because It's Just Not Done, and people are worried about potential wank that may or may not actually occur.

Best guess follows what anon was saying about shutting out canons and casts from one another and mods not feeling comfortable with doing that.

I think it would be interesting if age-up mechanics allowed for character growth after a canon; if people were willing to play with that sort of development taken into consideration I'd be totally okay with the mechanic. Physical aging only creates a whole new level of discomfort for me, however.

amat used to (i haven't been near it in years) have an option where characters under 16 but over 12 could go to the "children's island" and live a few years and then come into the game aged up to 18. no one ever used it and no one i asked about it understood it, including mods (the original mods put it in place and amat has gone through many mod teams).

so at the end of the day, i don't have a lot of faith that anyone would use it if that "played with more development" option were there, or that characters would be appreciably different if they did. experience tells me that if you don't want minors in your game, you'd have to make it a hard rule.

I haven't really got the appeal of AMAT to begin with, but that seems like an odd way to AU characters to be an appropriate age. I guess that's to allow development without having to headcanon what happened after a piece of media ended? Sounds like a good idea in theory but not clearly enough presented to be useful.

you might be right on that, but i could have sworn i'd been in at least one game that had a hard 18+ with no aging up rule. it would have been a while ago, though.

that said, if it's something that people are already doing/has already happened, i fail to see the problem. either games in play have an age up or a lowered age limit, meaning that this isn't something brand new and isn't even the lowest out there. i really honestly do get that it can be unsettling if not downright upsetting for some people, but the only thing i can say is to just do your best to avoid it on your own. maybe someone will make a game with a hard 18+ rule, and in that case, i hope it's something that catches your attention. there are just too many canons that use teenagers that people want to play in smutty/shippy scenarios for most mods to want to cut those out completely. not only could it cut out complete canons, but it can cut out half of an established pairing, or half a canon. that might not apply to you, but it could affect people who might otherwise like to join a game.

i really am sorry it bothers people enough to not want to play, but i personally appreciate a rule that's more accommodating as a whole instead of one that might cut out a lot of canons that likely revolve around shipping/smut icly.
