I'm bad at this

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

since some anons were complaining about not being able to take the event seriously because of the "character creation" part, it's been clarified that it's not about making up a character/backstory/personality and more about having a different set of skills. this was what my character was going to be focusing on anyway, so it doesn't change anything for me, but what do other anons think, now that it's been pointed out?

anon, no matter how many times this question gets asked, the answers are going to be the same. people are disappointed, they don't like it, they've already decided that and they aren't going to change their minds.

My main interest was the silliness, so that's dead now.

For the people who didn't think their characters would be all that impressed or take it seriously, it's probably not enough of a change. The monsters aren't real, the characters' injuries are only damage points subtracted from a hit point pool or whatever. Okay, you don't have to deal with your best friend being ridiculous and LARPing it up, but it's still just a simulation up until the last second.

what the two anons above me said. especially the last comment. the worst part to me about this event is that it doesn't even MATTER. it's all still playing pretend in the end. they keep saying how ~~*REAL*~~ the challenges are and then emphasizing how it's "pretend". make up your minds...

besides that, the change to the character creation part? the mods are backpedaling super hard. early details specifically mentioned creating a character. so i just roll my eye at it. too little too late. still dumb. the only way to save this disappointing event would've been to completely re-work it.

I really don't understand why this event has caused so much squabbling, and I don't understand why everyone seems to think it's going to be either silly or serious and you can't have it both ways. I've done both silly and serious threads in the past Arehtei events too, and I've got a great balance planned for this one. Plus, there have been frequent opportunities in the past for characters to be overwhelmed with emotions and do things they wouldn't usually do. Nobody complained about those that I'm aware, but slap the "D&D character" label on it and suddenly nobody wants anything to do with it?

So, a lot of honest questions here. Is this a matter of people not knowing or liking D&D? If they hadn't put it in terms of tabletop RP and instead had framed it as "your character gains a skill they do not currently possess and must be brave enough to move forward despite a lack of their usual confidence," would people be okay with it, even though the only meaningful difference is the D&D label? Are people grudgewanking the mod who's running it? Everyone on my timeline is really enthusiastic about this and having a lot of fun planning things out. So am I just somehow not acquainted with the people who are really upset? Am I just lucky enough that nobody I talk to is willing to kick up a fuss off anon? Or is it really just two or three people out of the whole game in here complaining?

I've been following all the threads here, and so far the only arguments I've seen that didn't seem to be very personal are the fact that this is Thras's first appearance and unlike the previous three Arehtei he's not completely out of control, and it's a "cracky" set-up. But there's a lot of crack to be found within the game premise itself, and as with all the events in the past, we still have a lot of control over what we're doing. We can set up both serious and cracky scenarios as we see fit. If you want a deep and meaningful fear challenge for your character to overcome, you can write one. Just because it isn't being spoonfed to you, that doesn't mean you can't do it.

In before "hi mods" and "get your head out of the mods' assholes". I'm neither of these things. I just genuinely do not understand why people are talking like this is the worst thing to ever happen to the game.

Personally, I would suggest anyone coming up with a deep and meaningful fear challenge for their character to overcome to save it for when their character is not in the middle of a simulated game. Might lose some of its effectiveness, otherwise.

I do agree some anons are getting overly personal about disliking the event, though.

what the above anon said, basically. the main problem is that it's literal pretend and doesn't actually matter. no one is in actual danger. it's also the first appearance of an arehtei being treated as an optional side event which makes those of us aligned to thras pretty salty.

but honestly for me it's the fakeness of it all. there's nothing at stake here so there's honestly no real growth my character can obtain from this. hence the disappointment.

Daimonia's first appearance was pretty lowkey and everything about searching her out afterward was optional. ...Which led to no one finding her. I don't know what happened there, I definitely heard interest, but maybe we never got the emotion swing right idk. Her appearance was preceded by the festival to remember the dead and some emotional effects with grief, but there have been bravery/fear effects recently too. I think it'd burn the playerbase and characters out if every arehtei was forcing characters into things.

Why does it need to be "real" for anything to be at stake? Again, honest question.

The fakeness of it is something I'm using to get growth. One of my character's most serious flaws is their impulsiveness. They don't consider the long-term consequences of many of their actions, especially when they're upset. So, since they aren't going to take the event completely seriously ICly, they're going to figure it doesn't matter and make a decision they should know better about if it were "real". The results will surprise them, and really drive home the fact that despite all the growth they've already had, they're still the sort of person who is capable of thoughtlessly making hurtful decisions. You don't need real danger for something to be hurtful.

I recognize that not everyone may have the IC context necessary to craft a scenario like that, but I can think of other ideas. Maybe a character who's never killed anyone before kills an imaginary enemy and is surprised by their own reaction, or lack thereof. Maybe even though they know it isn't real, they still can't bring themselves to hurt any of their enemies. Maybe a character has to alter the way they think to make their new skills work, and that gives them ideas on how to solve other IC problems.

So, is this really just a situation where some characters are suited to the event and others are not? Because while I totally get being salty about finding nothing in an event you were looking forward to, every event is going to have a bunch of people who aren't interested in it. It seems to me that a lot of the outcry here is really that it's some of the people aligned to Thras who are disappointed. That bites, it really does. But I don't think it's a useless event. Actually, I'm glad it's something so different. Sosyne's event was basically a rehash of the Elios event but with different monsters, and it's nice to know that not every Arehtei is going to show up on the warpath.
