okay

nope, completely different person.

but okay, if you want to keep telling yourself that it's absolutely impossible for more than one person to disagree with you then go ahead. more power to yourself.

But anon, then they'd have to admit that maybe not everyone is content with the same old stereotypes over and over!

cool, thanks for another insult against people who like it/don't have a problem with it.

As opposed to insulting the people who are tired of the Stalker Lesbain trope and being told to shut up and just ~give it a try~ thus supporting yet another instance of poor representation.

As opposed to selfish pissbabies who care about MUH WEPESENTASHUN to look good, but throw other lesbians under the bus if they don't agree?

Re: da

it's representation that *you* think is poor. Some people disagree.

i agree that characters like her can have unfortunate implications, and it's absolutely okay to be unhappy that she's the only same sex option available to female players. i agree that we shouldn't be insulting or telling people who are bothered by her character type to shut up.

i don't agree that she's inherently bad representation. syalla was almost certainly included as the same sex option because tharja, while controversial, was well-liked by a lot of lesbian fans, and many of them were upset that they couldn't marry her despite her clear interest in f!robin.

she might have been a "safe" option to include, and i'm sure that factored in too, but fact is there are people who appreciate having her as a same sex option, especially with her supports being sweeter than tharja's were.

should there have been more options? absolutely. can her being the only same-sex option for female players be seen as having unfortunate implications? definitely. but just like we shouldn't throw those who are bothered by these things under the bus, it's not okay to throw those who do appreciate what we got under the bus either.

really?

if we're talking about the japanese side of fandom (which intsys was probably taking into consideration for the most part), i didn't hear much of her being too popular with a lot of women there, lesbians included. however, she was popular with a lot of guys which most likely was a major factor in why she became a marriage candidate for f!kamui.

I heard she was popular with people of both genders, though. Also a good part of the Syalla fans I've seen are women, too, and I have yet to see a Syalla fan who doesn't ship her with f!Kamui whereas I *have* seen people shipping Zero with others than M!Kamui.

maybe we've seen different portions of the fandom? a lot of the female fe13 fans i've seen were really fond of her, at least

it's also worth keeping in mind that she ranked very high in the fe13 popularity polls, and each one reported that a significant number of the voters were female (~68%). that doesn't guarantee she's popular with women, but it'd be a lot more surprising if she ranked that high without getting a decent chunk of her votes from women considering the significant majority.

...Tharja was popular with male gamers in Japan because of fanservice.

And it's not just Syalla or Tharja alone that is bad. It's that the Stalker Lesbian is literally a common showing of lesbian characters. Homura Akemi and one of the Yuri Kuma Arashi characters are textbook examples and that's three seconds of thinking. Syalla and Tharja fall in line with this trope. I'm angry because it's yet another instance of being tossed a trope I'm tired of and that largely represents me in media, similar to the stereotypical flamboyant gay man who flirts with anything with a dick and is largely considered obnoxious.

"Hi, I know everything about lesbianism so I'm entitled to talk over everyone else. My word is a sacred Word Of Goddess so no one can ever disagree, and if anyone defies me I'll yell the same boring arguments at them and act like I'm the only one whose words matter. Because it's all about me, me and only me."

I see you ignored the other anon pointing out the same thing about Tharja.

But nice ignoring cultural context. Sorry you don't like it. It's an annoying trope, along with "lesbianism is something to grow out of." But that doesn't exist either, amirite?

So I have to reply to absolutely everyone before I can deign myself to "talk" to you? That's not how things work in Real Life.

But by all means, keep shoving your "woe is me, look at me, worship me, tell me I'm right or I'll cry and guilt trip you" bullshit. Next post will be fun, I can already tell!

tharja was popular with several female players, too. of course male gamers liked her for the fanservice factor, but she had a good number of female fans.

the stalker trope is shitty, and especially in the context of a queer character. we agree on that. it's okay to be upset with that character type being used again, and it's okay to be upset that there aren't any other options.

just, you know. try keeping in mind that your opinion isn't the only one that matters? it's absolutely okay for you to be upset, but some of this thread makes it sound like anyone who's okay, let alone happy, with the options we got is terrible. that's not an okay way to act, just like it's not okay for those happy with it to act like the opinion of those upset shouldn't be considered at all.

Yeah, this. I like that both Zero and Syalla are characters with quite the hidden depths (like Zero's fucked up past that left quite the scars on his psyche, or Syalla's desire to love and be loved mixed with her nonexistant social skills) and who can come to love the Kamuis no matter their gender. That makes them damn interesting and I hate how some people refuse to give them a chance, specially Syalla since she's quite more sympathetic than Tharja.
