surely it takes less time to run up one flight of stairs than push a button, wait for the elevator, get in, wait for the doors to close, go to whatever floor other people inside are going to, get to your own floor and get out

Because the stairs are magically just there.

You have to go down the hall, go through a door, climb the stairs--usually halved between floors, by the way--go through another door, and go down however many halls to your class.

Elevator, however, is usually on the first floor and right next to my class and I have class in a building halfway across a huge campus with ten minutes in between. Oh, and I have to WALK that campus.
