Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. Please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. Name some good m/m series. Don't care what medium.

(By which I mean either m/m-focused series or good series with prominent m/m.)

lmao it's 3:30 am i can't read

uh i only watch la, so that's what this list is

for fantasy, there's merlin, which is very popular and has a shitton of really, really good merlin/arthur fanfic. the show itself is of varying quality, but can usually be depended upon for being funny.

legal drama/comedy has suits, which is a smaller fandom with some pretty quality fic. harvey/mike is the main pairing and has some clever authors, but it's pretty small.

sci-fi has stargate: atlantis, which is one of my favorites. it was at one point a huge fandom (esp the john/rodney section) and is a personal favorite. it requires a lot of time and dedication to get to the point where it's addictive, but you don't have to watch the original stargate series to understand it -- i never bothered.

if you're into shitty hilaribad teen supernatural "drama", teen wolf is my guilty pleasure of choice. stiles/derek is hot as hell (but one of the characters is probably (?) underage -- i guesstimate 16 -- and the other is a 20-something) and has only one season out with another starting up in june. the first episode is absolute shit, but the following 11 are varying levels of funny.

Ooh. I was hoping for some series with canon m/m, actually, but I'll take this too. I have been meaning to watch Merlin, I've enjoyed RPing with the characters and Arthurian remixes are always a good time. Never heard of Suits! I've actually watched a fair bit of the original Stargate and some of Atlantis so I do enjoy that 'verse, I've just never gotten into the fandom for it. Is Teen Wolf about werewolves??

oh, sorry! i don't actually like most lgbqt shows because they tend to... not really be all that good. just a bunch of the same cliches over and over, so i just pretend everyone is gay in the primetime shit.

suits had a really brief burst of popularity while it was airing and i enjoyed it a lot, but things have definitely died down. it's not like "omg best show EVER" but it entertained me.

and teen wolf is a remake of the teen wolf movie from the 80s, only they fucked around with it so much that it doesn't matter. it's about this kid named scott who gets bitten by a werewolf and is suddenly amazingly good at lacrosse and attractive to girls for the ~FIRST TIME~ and we're supposed to really like him, but all anyone cares about is scott's human bff stiles and the last remaining werewolf from the town, derek, who is very obviously madly in love with stiles but is too antagonistic to just fuck him already. i would like to stress guilty pleasure, since the show itself is pretty bad to start with, but the plot does get interesting and there are a few curveballs if you can put up with a lot of cheese and a terrible protagonist.

oddly enough, teen wolf is the only of the shows with a canonically gay character, who only gets a little bit of screentime, but it's heavily implied stiles might be bisexual. pretty much everyone assumes it, at least.

Ah I see! I'm actually primarily on the animanga/videogame side of things so I'm not terribly aware of trends in LA, but sounds like everyone's got the same problems on that end, lol.

... Yeah Teen Wolf does sound up my alley, I do have a weakness for ridiculous shows that incidentally redeem themselves with fun characters and being ridiculous. Thanks again for the recs!

oh there's also the hawaii 5-0 remake, which is surprisingly good for the first season right up to the finale, and then the second season was less good but better than the trainwreck of that last fucking episode. steve/danno is the slash pairing of choice.

I've heard of that one! One of my friends was big into it, so I'll definitely have to look it up. Thanks, anon!

Oh Teen Wolf.

I do like this show, but I'll +1 the shittiness of the first episode. If you can get over that hump (and a lot of people couldn't with good reason) I'll also + a million to the Stiles/Derek corner of fandom. There is some kinky, hilarious, good fanfic writers out there for such a stupid MTV series, haha.

It's also on Netflix, so if you have that check it out.

For the anime side of things Tiger & Bunny doesn't have canon m/m ship per se but there's a lot of blatant ship tease between the titular characters and the creators have gone on record as saying they don't mind if people interpret it that way.

It's a superhero series set up in a buddy cop style (the enthusiastic, idealistic vet partnered with the no-nonsense rookie) that starts out light-hearted and then plunges into the plot-twists and conspiracy. I have not delved into the fandom much, but I've heard there can be some crazy and varied quality, so buyer beware on that front.

I've heard a bunch about Tiger & Bunny, hmmmmm. Is it anything like Star Driver? For some reason I wasn't as fond of that one as I thought I'd be, so...

ayrt

(Anonymous) 2012-03-19 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I have never seen Star Driver, so you should probably take my evaluation with a big ol' grain of salt. But looking at the wiki, I don't... think so? The main character of each seems to be big on protecting people, but that's the main parallel I can see. Stardriver seems a bit more over-the-top fantasy/sci-fi. Don't get me wrong, T&B can be pretty silly and over-the-top as well, but in a different way? Also, there's only one character to which a high school setting applies, so that may color things differently--a good chunk of the main cast are in their twenties or older.

All that said, it still might not end up being your cup of tea. I know that I ended up enjoying it more than I expected to, but I know mileage varies on that sort of thing.

what does ayrt actually mean...

Okay, thanks! I'll have to give it a try one of these days, I usually enjoy most mecha anime.

anon you replied to

(Anonymous) 2012-03-19 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, well this one isn't really mecha. There are protective robo-looking suits and the bad guys use mecha at one point but that's abooouut it.

/wanted to make sure I wasn't falsely advertising, whoops!

oooooh I was getting 'are you ready to' on google lol

(Anonymous) 2012-03-19 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Mecha-looking anime count too! Anything futuristic/wacky, really. :) Don't worry about it! I am pretty easy to please.

lol ARE YOU READY TO hear me ramble at you

(Anonymous) 2012-03-19 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Futuristic and wacky definitely fit the bill! Happy watching, if you do try. (And happy watching if you try something else, too!)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-19 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Junjou Romantica. Corny as fuck but I still enjoy it.
Eerie Queerie. A cute little four-volume manga, very goofy.
Earthian for something more classic in anime.

Most of what I do is skim through the Josei section, look for which manga has really good art, and read those. Sometimes you run into gems, sometimes they're so fucking hideous that they're fun to read.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-19 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah I've heard of JR. Read/own EQ and enjoyed it, hahaha. I do have a volume of Earthian I still haven't gone through. Dunno where I stashed it, though.

I never thought of looking in the Josei section! Thanks for the tip.
