I remember this show, it aired off and on for a couple years in the early '00s

Vaguely. The spelling is uncommon and it's not the world's most common name to begin with, but people don't give me blank stares when I tell it to them.

They do use the more common spelling instead of it's actual one, though. Constantly. Even my school gets it wrong.

That said, I'm 28 and I loved the Sentinel.

yeah, i don't think they have it in their hearts to intentionally be assholes, but i still twitch at every "honey" or "sweetie"

and i shouldn't still find it so surprising to discover other people have seen this show! i've attempted to inflict the first season on my friends multiple times (i have the dvds) but other than them and my mother, i've never met anyone who even recognizes it in person.

Really? Sentinel fandom was huge back in the day. I was never into it, but I was in Due South fandom and like half of the older fans there came from Sentinel fandom.
