Terraria, maybe? It's cheap, fun, can be hard if you really want to get into the late monster-slaying game, but that's completely optional and you can easily stick to making giant silly buildings and exploring the underground.

I miss when it was easy to connect to friends in this game. God that was so much fun.

machinarium, cute point and click puzzle game, not that hard but if you're having difficulty there's no shame in speeding up your life by using the inbuilt hint feature or a guide
botanicula is by the same people and in a similar vein but a little more relaxing
the stanley parable, there's one review that basically goes "the game crashed and I thought it was a feature" it's a funny game made using the portal 2 engine with a soothing comedic narrator
thomas was alone, 2d puzzle platformer, made me care far too much about shapes, there are one or two tricky parts but overall it's fairly easy, the hardest part is where there are one or two jumps that seem like you shouldn't be able to make it but you can
trine, 2d puzzle game kind of, you switch between different characters with different strengths to solve puzzles and kill things, can be a little glitchy but good fun, there are sequels as well if you like the first one, might want to check out the demo first
year walk, okay I haven't actually finished this one but it's an interesting puzzle game with a cool style, can recommend from what I've played
to the moon, made in rpg maker and shows what you can do with it, very nice little rpg story
LIMBO, easy eerie puzzle game, cool art style, maybe tries a little hard

all of these are around (or under in the case of year walk) your price range

$9.99:
little inferno, portal, the secret of monkey island, goat simulator, surgeon simulator

$4.99:
sonic cd, organ trail

not sure how many of these are "easy" but most of them are very silly. the steam version of sonic cd is just good.

seconding terraria

audiosurf is addictive as fuck and goes on sale a lot. f-zero meets guitar hero meets a match three game in a music visualizer. the sequel is available on early release but i can't in good conscience recommend it at its current price and state of finished-ness.

terraria - for reasons mentioned already
unholy heights - a ridiculous game where you're satan taking care of an apartment for monsters and you have to buy them apartment upgrades to keep them happy, collect rent, and fight off adventurers that show up to try and steal your money
audiosurf - if you like rhythm sort of games, it uses your own music library which is a plus
hatoful boyfriend - date pigeons; the writing is actually pretty good and the main character has a very defined and weird personality, also has a darker mode but really you can just go through and date pigeons
mini metro - create and run a metro service in the most efficient way possible to get shapes around to their shape stations; it's in early access but it's definitely playable already, very minimalistic in style but I think it works for the game
you have to win the game - more difficult than the other games I've listed but free, it's a platformer that goes out of its way to be retro to the point of having the graphics mimic an old crt monitor (but you can turn that off if it bugs you)
waking mars - explore martian caves, grow weird martian plants to create a proper internal environment to allow you to keep moving forward in the game
thomas was alone - get way too attached to a bunch of rectangles in a not too difficult platformer (though the extra story after the main game is a lot more difficult)
the stanley parable - it's a walking simulator in some respects, but it's very tongue-in-cheek, the narration is great imo, and the whole game is about choice or lack thereof in video games, so it works
ironcast - play a matching game to fight your victorian era mech against someone else's victorian era mech, but instead of it being match three you draw lines across matching tiles and can make the line as long or short as you want depending on where the tiles are. each tile corresponds to different stats/supplies for your mech, and you have an upper limit, so you might not want to just make the largest combos possible. this one's $14.99 so it's at the upper edge of your budget limit though
stacking - play as a tiny matryoshka doll boy trying to rescue his family by jumping into larger matryoshka dolls to control them and use their special skills/be able to jump into the next size group of dolls to control them
world of goo - connect goo balls to get to pipes that are really high up/across big gaps/over bridges/over spikes/over clouds of deletion power/etc to get the goo balls not making up the structure into a jar

Marvel Heroes 2015

It's free*, pretty damn easy unless you're going into the way advanced stuff, and lots of fun walking around stomping mooks and punching Magneto in the face.

(*you get one hero to start with for free and a tiny-ass bank, but you can get a second hero your second day if you want to play someone else and the bank probably won't fill up until you're either done with the game or are willing to pay to play more.)
