hey anons, what games were you in that ended, and how did it go? which game endings stick out to you as a great way to go out?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I was involved in a few game closings but only one really stood out to me

It was this really small game and the mods never ran events, just empty promises. So when they finally ran an event it was awesome! Except not all the event posts required mod involvement and tags from npcs to continue and it took them foreeever to tag back

finally they declared the end of the event because threads were taking too long to wrap up, and made this one huge epic post basically declaring how each player battle went down having the mod characters basically the heroes of the universe. Me and a couple other players told them that wasn't really fair, because no one had a chance to actually participate.

They told us we could continue to play out our threads even though the plot was over and they wouldn't be involving their npcs. Someone called them out on it, like no that's not how that works. You decided what happened to our characters already, it's not fair for us to be able to continue if the ending is already there and we can't change anything that happens.

No response from the mods until two days later they closed the game because they couldn't handle the stress

:( well that sucks, sorry about your shitty mods

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Insert the mods having passive aggressive tantrums on plurk and this sounds like the ending of Star Kingdom.

I was in Mayfield, Exit Void and Luceti. Frankly, all of the endgames suffered from taking too long to actually get the endgame up, though Luceti was the worst for it. I probably had the most fun in Mayfield's, but I should note that with Exit Void's I had been planning to drop at the end of the current cycle had it not gone to endgame.

Word of advice: Don't remove the game's main conflict and then take months to post the final resolution, your players all check out.

haven had the same problem though i get why they did in their case.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
the most surreal game ending i was in was definitely rivelata. there was a pretty cool plot that really opened up the rest of the world, and a bunch of characters left the setting, while the rest of them came back for a final boss battle... and then everyone seemed to collectively agree to give up, and everyone stopped posting. it wasn't intended to be endgame, it just worked out that way. out with a bang, i guess?

Technically I was around for Asgard's endgame, but it dragged so much behind schedule I ended up not tagging any of the endgame posts because I lost interest by then.

It was a really great game and it's a shame it ended like that.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you me? I had the same feeling at the end of Asgard. I wanted to be there for it but it dragged on so long that when it finally was posted I just couldn't muster any energy for it. Sorry Asgard, you were a great game.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
i've never even been in a game that had a scheduled endgame. every game i've been in that closed did so due to, like, mod burnout or people just not fucking posting anymore, and i've always jumped ship when i started to smell imminent death in the air.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I was in Luceti for years, but by the time we finally got endgame, I hadn't gotten any tags or even enthusiasm for threads from anyone for almost 4 months. It was impossible to tell my character's mindset for when endgame actually happened, and it was so underwhelming that I basically idled out and handwaved it all. I put a lot of time into Luceti as my home game, so admittedly I'm still pretty bitter about it.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
my first one didn't have a true endgame, it just fizzled out

I left Singularity a month or two before the official closing, and really the last big event where the PCs overthrew Hypatia should have been the endgame. Taking her out and then getting to go home right away would have been a more satisfying resolution than that happening and then everybody just sitting with their thumbs up their asses for a couple months.

I was there for the End of Edensphere and it was a transcendent experience.

The thing is, from the outside, it could look like a pretty bad way to go - because in the end, player actions didn't really matter, the world did what it did never mind what we did. But from the inside, at least for my character and the people I had most CR with, the point wasn't the central mystery or even getting to affect the end at all. It was about coming to terms with that end and everything it represented in terms of realizing what Edensphere was and what it did to our characters. The mods did a great job announcing the endgame well ahead of time and then building up to it in terms of events, plotting, setting, etc., and there was a fuckton of player planning and interaction around it. Others might not agree, I guess, but for me - especially considering my character's Main Conflict, there I probably just deanoned myself, hi - everything was perfect.

Lesson: Plan the endgame at least half a year in advance, don't make it just one big event but let it build and unfold, and remember that eventually DWRP is about CR not about "winning" or "solving" or actually getting out of that damn jamjar.

End of Edensphere was wonderful. After being in another game that ended terribly I am even more appreciative that the mods knew it was time to close down. The endgame stuff was great and some of the fondest memories I have of RP. So happy it ended on a high note.

i always feel so much regret whenever i see edensphere get brought up. the game looked awesome and fun from the outside, but i never got around to joining it.

i don't think there'll be another game like it which makes me even sadder. i loved even just following and reading the threads of the characters that were in game.

As a former mod of ES, this makes me happy to hear, anon. I can't speak for the others, but while having to close up shop broke my heart, I do feel like it was the right decision for the game and it makes me happy to hear that even years after we've closed, people have fond memories of it.

Never forget. Always remember to eat your apples, and the grey man LIES.

I will forever regret that I didn't come back for the endgame. I didn't really get to play out the game's closure and so it's just kind of always been a regret in the back of my mind. I had a wonderful character in mind, too, I just never got to play him.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-15 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
everything i've heard about ES makes it sound like it was probably the closest to perfection a JRP game has ever achieved. i can't recall any major wank ever coming from it, just people having a blast in the game setting all the way to the end.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Distant Skies had an invasion event and as it ended the mods were just like oh, btw, game's over now. I get that there hadn't been interest in events for a while, player involvement in the game in general had been waning, but it was kind of sprung on us.

...really I'd have minded less if they hadn't kicked everyone out of the comms and flocked all the game info, it makes CRAU stuff a lot harder.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-15 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
was anyone in Econtra when it ended

i remember there was a lot of pointing and laughing because the ending was so retarded but i can't remember exactly what it entailed (besides Ankhi being a shitbeard but that's par for the course)

(Anonymous) 2015-05-15 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
trans9 ended in a flagration of wank that the mods just released a bunch of text documents detailing the plot and said "here you go game closed"

idk i'm still sad that the game ended cause there were some solid rpers there despite the politicking and wank.

i will forever regret not doing more in that game with the people who offered CR to me

and more in the game, in general

i loved the setting and a lot of the players and i'm terminally buttflustered that it ended the way it did

(Anonymous) 2015-05-17 01:16 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah that was maddening. so was them going "the game was never supposed to last this long!" the day before they shut it down and then "it's all the players fault for pushing endgame too fast!" the day after.

t9's ending is my good for those moods when i need to get pointlessly aggravated about stupid shit.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-15 08:30 am (UTC)(link)
i'm in a game ending right now

so far it seems to be dying with a whimper, not a bang :(
