Badass military strategist characters that are in charge of armies/fleets/space fleets, and do show enormous strategic competence at their fields in their canons. (real life examples being Patton, Alexander the Great, Hannibal Barca, Rommel, etc... but obviously a fictional one).

basically any strategist from the suikoden series, i'm pretty partial to elenor silverberg from suikoden iv but you should let's play it since it has an infamously slow boat and is probably the worst of the series.

otherwise, georg (who is in multiple games) might be up your alley.

Olivier from Fullmetal Alchemist springs to mind. Mustang too, but definitely on a smaller scale. (you could argue for Bradley as well)

idk why but despite the godly levels of hero worship chinese culture has for zhuge liang, zhou yu and sima yi always struck me more as badasses than he did

Miles Vorkosigan is a brilliant strategist, and also excitingly fucked up, by his experiences in battle, physical disability and mental illness, and the culture he grew up in! for the bulk of the vorkosigan saga he's in command of a fleet of mercenaries and is constantly grabbing victory from the jaws of defeat by wits and high-speed bluffing.

(alternatively, his father Aral, who is considerably less... excitable, but also wonderful and brilliant.)

... or, from the same series, Ty Kung, the tough old mercenary commander who mentors Miles and whose Thing is being a stubborn, honorable military genius.

OP, along the space opera route, you might also enjoy Honor Harrington from the eponymous series (a young space navy officer with a telepathic alien cat and a tendency to get herself into serious trouble and out of it via cleverness); Grand Admiral Thrawn from the Star Wars extended universe (an alien Imperial officer who tried to restore the Empire after Palpatine's defeat, and very nearly succeeded); a variety of characters from Babylon 5 (the majority of the main cast are in primarily diplomatic/political positions, but many of them have backstories involving serious military command, and there's some great large-scale space battles around about s4.)

If you want a woman, Misa Hayase from Macross is a good example. Also Oscar from Rose of Versailles.

First thing that comes to mind is Robin from Fire Emblem: Awakening. He/she is designed by the player, but has a well-developed personality, and is actually a skilled military tactician. (The level of technology is far from modern, though, if that's what you're looking for.)

i love fire emblem and all, but well developed personality (or for any fe character really, but robin especially so) isn't what i'd use to describe robin

Okay, well-developed was the wrong word. "Appable" is more what I meant.
