At least wait a bit if we really have to. I understand the reason for the move, but I wish more people were at least willing to compromise with the concerns of users who this is a bit sudden for (users who still have paid time, for one thing) rather than jumping right on the "MOVE NOW NOW NOW" train.

This is a very quick, emotionally heated decision that I think needs a month or two to settle. I know that a lot of you are sick of LJ's customer service and that the best way to send a message to them is to pack up and go right now, but a mood like that isn't conductive to weighing the options objectively and listening to opposing concerns. When you're excited/passionate about something, it's hard to think about potential problems. I don't object to moving, but I think deciding on it less than a week after the issues came up is a bad choice.

I personally don't think I'll be returning to LJ, but yes, I certainly advocate thinking things through calmly. Some of us know we're not going to support LJ, but that isn't any call to pressure users who haven't decided yet or have strong reasons not to move.

I've always been impressed by our mod team, and I'm sure the final decision will be for the best.

I can understand how it might seem sudden, but I can promise you that at least some of us have thought very rationally about this move. I could give you a laundry list of reasons why I no longer feel comfortable RPing on Livejournal, most of which have been stewing for a while and have nothing to do with the visual aspects of the site that were introduced a few days ago.

I am sorry for the users who still have paid time on LiveJournal, but it would be impossible to sync the move so that no one is losing money on the transfer. There are some people who have 6 months to a year in paid time left, and while it is bad luck to be stuck with that, you can't expect the entire game to wait that long.

I don't think it's irrational, I just think that the people who would prefer to stay and have valid concerns with DreamWidth are kind of being pushed to the side right now. If you are no longer comfortable RPing on LJ, would that mean you wouldn't even stick around for a month or two extra to accomodate the concerns of people who aren't quite on board yet?

A lot of the concerns have to do with seeing how DW handles the increased userbase, or with newbies not knowing where to go, as well as the paid accounts thing. Gradually easing the game over would make some of those concerns a lot better, as people would at least lose less paid time (especially seeing as most people I know do the 2-month renewal for RP accounts), we'd see a bit of how DW deals, and we'd have time to direct interested players to the new page on DW rather than leaving them with a few links and a deserted game.

My big issue right now is that a lot of users seem to see the only options as "migrate ASAP or I drop", whether it's because something about LJ makes them uncomfortable or because dropping LJ right away would make the biggest statement. But I think the people with concerns deserve to be accommodated, too, and I don't think we need to, as I've seen come up in the last few days, just move right away to "rip off the band-aid". This isn't directed at just you, anon, but I'm just kind of tired of seeing the people who would potentially drop because they don't want to move treated as lazy or as acceptable collateral damage vs. the people who want to move right away being seen as the sensible side that needs to be catered to.

Sorry to get all tl;dr and again this isn't directed at you in particular, this was just the comment I decided to respond to, but even if most of the game is okay with the move I think it'd be a great thing to do to compromise with the users who want to stay and take it a bit more gradually.

Ripping off the band-aid probably is the best solution in this case, though.

For one thing, people don't want to sit around and wait for a decision to be reached, especially if they have expired paids they want to renew but don't know which journal to do it on. The staff at DreamWidth has said that there is, even after the rush of new accounts, no real danger of server overload. The maintainer is very experienced and has, I believe, worked for LJ and Mozilla before so I trust him on that.

IMO a lot of the hesitation seems to be not wanting to trade in familiar problems for unfamiliar ones, even if there are a lot less problems here it might seem like more because LJ has problems you're used to. In that case, delaying it might just be delaying the little bit of frustration that's probably inevitable, so ripping off the band-aid is an appropriate metaphor I think.

LJ is just going to keep making itself harder to work with, so I'm in favor of the switch because, if we're going to have to deal with a bit of frustration either way, I'd rather do it with the website that actually seems to care, and I don't consider myself one of the people who is really determined to boycott LJ. If we stayed, I would stay, too.

It's not really all that sudden. For some of us this is just the logical culmination of years of being stuck with bad customer service and slowly getting more and more frustrated.

What if the game decided on a move, then waited a few months for the community to import/LJ paid accounts to run out? That also gives people time to decide if they want to stay with the game or not. This is, of course, assuming the poll votes to move as well.

I don't think voting now is a hasty decision. This is the second time the game has held a vote. LJ has stated they are not going to rollback release 88 and that they're going through with their site overhaul. LJ also has terrible customer service. Even if the S2 style mimicking the old comment pages works, they're going to keep changing the site along with their plans, and issues are just going to keep coming up. The only real reason to stay on LJ at this point is because we're already there and moving is hard.
