I was really happy about it. More of those cool kids who are cooler every time we see them, a little badass crystal gem-ing, and a little more insight to some of the heavy stuff Steven's been sitting on.

guys it's one 11 minute episode of a fucking cartoon. they are both cartoons. generally targeted at kids. kids who probably really like both shows.

pretty sure you're gonna be okay dudes. the show's mystical cartoon integrity isn't tragically compromised.

Can someone explain the rise of this fandom to me? Where did it come from? Did it emerge from certain plurk circles? Has it spread to the rest of the internet? I've heard people compare it to MLP. I'm completely out of the loop because I've only known it as one of the cartoons I occasionally flip on TV to keep my kid quiet for a few minutes until the characters started popping up all over dwrp.

The plot got a little heavier and Tumblr shouted that it has certain traits that feminist fandom creams ourselves over.

People began to notice that it had a bit more diversity than a lot of other shows on top of treating kids as being able to understand things more complex and adult than fart jokes and not everything is spoonfed.

It deals with such heavy things as grief, showing multiple ways to grieve the loss of someone you love, that it's painful and not something you're over in a week (indeed, there are people still grieving after 12~ years), that kids pick up on what you say about them or around them, etc. Add into that the varied body types, skin colors, family situations, etc. and it attracts attention of an adult audience, too. So it basically spread across multiple platforms by word of mouth, gifs, etc.

It always had some attention on it because the creator (Rebecca Sugar) had a large role in Adventure Time (which had a decent rp population a few years back). If I had to guess where the fandom "started" it would be from the existing Adventure Time fanbase.

Because when people thought it was at risk for being cancelled after CN cut back on how often they played reruns every week, everyone ever spammed on tumblr that they needed to support the show and watch it in what can only be called the most genius ad campaign I've ever seen.

i've been hearing about it since before it started airing, and seen people talking about it off-handedly, but a couple weeks ago five extremely plot-heavy episodes all dropped at once and made the existing fans basically explode with excitement and fanart and shipping, which made their friends go "wait what?" and start marathoning it.

like wtnv and off, at least a couple of the homestuck bnfs started doing art for it around then, too, which sent their followers off to investigate and spread it out across the internet.

(i agree that it's very good and deserves the attention, personally!)
