i have a brand new muse that, before i started his app, i was like "i can't see him as any one monster, so he'd be a great character to app!"

and now that my app is almost finished i desperately want him to get naga.

dammit this is not what i wanted to happen

(Anonymous) 2015-03-09 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
i'm in the same boat, anon. i specifically went in telling myself not to read too much about the monsters, so i wouldn't get attached.

finished my personality, did my opt-outs, and now am dealing with a fifty-fifty split on desperately wanting either demon or minotaur

i've made a huge mistake

I'm pleased the mods have expanded the bestiary. Hopefully this will cut down on godmoding shenanigans and people trying to sneak extra powers in without AC rewards.

...on a side-note, the fact that you can have a unicorn kelpie makes me really want a kelpie now.

Eh, I don't think people were purposely trying to sneak extra powers in for the most part, just that the previous mods weren't entirely clear on what could and could not work. They built the groundwork for a great game, but the bestiary was FAR from thorough and definitely left a lot of assumed freedom.

Re: RYSLIG

(Anonymous) 2015-03-09 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Some of them were getting a little ridiculous though. I mean, being able to travel from Vandare to Bavan near-instantly because of super-speed? That's just beyond the pale. There's moving at supernatural speed, and then there's teleportation, and that's more like the latter.

True the bestiary was far from thorough, but there's a point where common sense should take over. "The sky's the limit" should never be the assumed limit.

I can see why people would want to do that, though, given how limited CR can be with the distances between places at time. :c

Re: RYSLIG

(Anonymous) 2015-03-09 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
there is no reason for that, when it's just as easy to say they started the trip a day ago and just got there. it's more fun to imagine them on a trip to the city (or to vandare) than to just go "oh he flew and was there instantly"

Re: RYSLIG

Eh, to each their own. I, personally, don't find the road trips idea as fun, really. I find it cumbersome at times to have to spontaneously handwave travel and it being a tight fit and there not being much of an option to speed it up. The "has to take a full day" limits face-to-face CR and is why you typically don't have a lot of big, sprawling games to begin (without a network). Ryslig only works because of few actual locations close enough together and a network.

Basically, I can see both sides of this argument. It'd just be nice if there were a way or two to travel faster so your character doesn't lose a full day of possible interactions to traveling just so they can interact with other people, then ANOTHER full day traveling back. Buuuut that doesn't make the "instant travel" an invalid criticism in itself.

TLDR on this tangent is I wish there was a happy medium between the two.

I've been assuming that, since there are cars, there's been taxi services that run between Vandare and Bavan. The full day thing is on foot, walking. With top walking speeds of 9.0 km/h or 5.6 mph, I can see how it'd take all day. Especially if people walk slower than that.

With cars in the 1950's able to reach 60 mph or more, it would be way cut down. Suddenly an all day trip would only take a couple of hours, if that.

It's 40 or 50 miles and there's BUSSES between the cities. Bavan busses, where Bavan doesn't mind monsters. An hour and a half to two hours is NOT crippling to CR between Vandare and Bavan. It's not like it takes all damn day or something!

Re: RYSLIG

(Anonymous) 2015-03-09 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Aren't the longer travel times based on being on foot? If it's really that horrible pay a fairy to take you, they CAN actually teleport and it would give them some pocket money.

the all day thing is on foot at a walking pace. A whole lot of things can go faster than the human walking pace of 3 mph.

I tend to forget that buses are a thing. They aren't listed on the FAQ, last I checked.

Don't the buses normally not run all week, though? Isn't it, like, once a week or something? I know it was notable that they ran all week for the intro log once...

Re: RYSLIG

(Anonymous) 2015-03-09 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I could see where one would assume that a scorpion could use their tails as a means to inject venom; that's what they do normally. If you didn't look under the monster FAQ where the mods said you couldn't, you wouldn't know. That's a forgivable mistake.

But some things, like gargoyles with steel skin and speedy monsters that could travel long distances in the blink of an eye were less innocent mistakes and more powerplaying.

The bus mention actually makes me wonder. Is there any consistent, easy-to-access information on buses? I don't think I've found any. Should this be brought to the attention of the mods just so we have a consistent source?

Re: Travel Times

(Anonymous) 2015-03-10 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been here since the beginning and the info on buses is rather vague and scattered. They exist, and they would be 1950s style since they are focused in Bavan, but I would LOVE to see some kind of bus travel times and bus routes.

Something like that would show both the routes (like do you have to change buses in Bavan if you're going from Vandare to Rota for example) and the travel times.

It's probably reasonable to say 1 and 1/2 hours to 2 hours by bus from Bavan to Vandare, and double that for Rota - though I *feel like* something said the bus would take 3 or 6 hours from Bavan to Rota or something...

But if there's a mathematician among us who can translate "takes most of a day to walk from Vandare to Bavan" into Bus time, that would be awesome, too.

Clearer travel times via different methods would help, yes.

Re: Travel Times

(Anonymous) 2015-03-10 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
there hasn't been mention of the busses going to rota, only back and forth between vandare and bavan. the difficult to travel and needing snowmobiles to even get out of rota was a plot point last time.

i expect these mods are going to alter the travel times and distances the first mods established.

According to this post http://rysligooc.dreamwidth.org/117297.html

from Bavan to Rota is 6 hours by car. Doesn't say there's a bus route, but that gives a time.

"Due to the roads and dangers, a road trip from Bavan to Rota is 6 hours long by car, or about 5 hours for the fastest monsters by foot if you cut in the middle of the fields, but the rivers do block the easiest pathway. Flying creatures have about 4 hours of flight worth to reach it in a straight line, providing they are in the most favorable wind conditions."

Why are there no Digital Devil Saga characters in this game? You'd think it'd be a perfect match.

A couple are thinking of apping. I know of Cielo and Heat.

I'd love to, but I already have two characters in this game and know I can't manage a third.
