not really a slob story because the roommate this has to do with was actually pretty tidy but

BUT.

When I first moved in four months ago, she was already living in the apartment, so her stuff was all in the kitchen. She had been nice enough to empty out a couple cabinets for me to use, so I just put all my stuff in there and didn't think to even look in the other cabinets, because I had all the space I needed.

When she moved out last week, I began to spread out into the rest of the kitchen and pantry... and discovered a TROVE of bulk food and drinks that she had clearly ever touched. GIANT boxes of spaghetti, big boxes of plain-ass saltine crackers, bulk boxes of oatmeal and cereal, and enough vienna sausage to make a cute tiny grilled sausage-octopus army.

The crown jewels, however, were two ENORMOUS plastic jugs—or maybe barrels; these things were about two feet tall and god knows how many liters—of pickled eggs that I found in the back of the pantry. She was from South Carolina, and I guess pickled eggs are a Thing down there (I'm from Boston), but I'd never have imagined that someone would buy the suckers in bulk. They were bright pink (from beet juice and artificial red coloring, according to the ingredients list) and submerged in vinegar, and against my better judgement I decided the best way to get rid of them was to pour them down the garbage disposal.

The vinegar smell wasn't that bad, but the eggs were another story. They sounded and bounced like squash balls when they hit the sink, and they FELT like rubber. Curious, I bit into one, and it tasted like rubber—vinegar-scented, bland, dry, crumbly-ass rubber. I've never met a pickle or fermented food I didn't like, and I gently spat out the mouthful I'd taken. It was the kind of thing you put in your mouth and realize you don't have the willpower to swallow.

I fried up some kimchi pancakes afterwards to banish the stale-vinegar smell, but even a day later, when I close my eyes I can still picture the exact texture and un-flavor of those eggs. Why my roommate decided to hoard not one, but TWO fucking barrels of the things in our pantry for god knows how many months, I'll never know.

playing two psls with two different people who have entirely different writing styles

one loves to write about their character's thoughts and feelings in brackets and the other prefers to write as little as possible outside of dialogue

it's jarring to switch between them. usually i try my best to match the writing style of whoever i'm playing with, but i've always wondered: to players who write as little character thoughts as possible, is it annoying to receive a tag with a lot of character reflection? and this is in action style tags with brackets and stuff.

i dont blame you; in this age of computer and phone magic, literally everybody I know sends a text or e-mail or something before they show up physically at a place, much less someone's house

a knock on the door unannounced gives me a bit of a start, too, and I usually expect a package delivery or solicitor... or an axe murderer posing as a package delivery person or solicitor.

watching Criminal Minds religiously when I was younger did not help.

Oooh, ooh, anon, I LOVE creepypastas! I think my favorite is ones like "Normal Porn for Normal People" where you can wonder, even just for a second, if it happened, or ones like "The Harbinger Experiment" that are written incredibly well. I can't stand ones like Jeff the Killer, though, because that one fucking sucks.

i recently told someone that i don't want to ship with her, and she said that she understood, but she still has her character icly pursue the ship and wax romantically about my character. i was initially okay with that, under the provision that she were oocly aware the ship would never happen, since i get that, like irl, certain characters would take longer to get over unrequited love, and some players might find it cool to rp this out.

that said, this has been going on for over four months now, and her character is acting as if he and my character are dating, and telling other characters so to the detriment of some of my cr. it doesn't help that her character has much more in-game popularity, authority and cr than mine, so even when my character says they are not dating, most other characters have more ic reasons to believe hers. meanwhile, the player has restarted cracking jokes about how neat it would be if our characters were in a ship and how they totally belong together. i have repeatedly reasserted that the ship will not happen, the player has said she's aware of it, but the ooc nudging continues and i feel as if i've been pretty much cornered into this ship.

any advice on how to deal with this? i can't exactly go to the mods, since they'll probably say that ic =/= ooc and just because we oocly agreed on no ship doesn't mean her character won't still try to make it happen. and i get that. but it just really obnoxious by this point.

i think you should still go to the mods and try to explain this to them. just because ic does not equal ooc does not mean you agreed to play out the "trying to make it happen" stuff, which it sounds like you didn't. tell them the player's behavior is making you a bit uncomfortable and ask the mods if they can tell them to tone it down.

The best comedy about North Korea, far better than The Interview, was made six years ago.

It’s called The Red Chapel, and it’s a documentary about two Danish-Korean comedians who go to North Korea to perform for Kim Jong Il. The idea they had was that they would do subversive comedy, they would come up with a sketch that looked like goofy slapstick but slyly mocked the North Korean government, and it would be a hilarious slap in the face to do it right in front of Kim Jong Il. That big silly wouldn’t even know they were making fun of him! Ha!

Over the course of their stay in North Korea, the idea falls apart. It becomes clear during rehearsals that their government minders are very aware of anything that could be the slightest bit subversive (or even really funny), and if any of that makes it into the final performance, the consequences will be very bad. Anything remotely satirical gets cut from the routine very early on.

Things go from demoralizing to horrific when the government minders take them on outings to see life in North Korea. Of course everyone they see looks totally fine and claims everything is wonderful. But one of the comedians has cerebral palsy, and he starts asking: why don’t I see any people like me? We’ve been here for weeks, and seen thousands of people; how is it that not one of them is visibly disabled?

He doesn’t get an answer. He breaks down emotionally and refuses to keep going along with the charade, but because his voice is hard for the North Korean minders to understand, the director “translates” his protests into praise for the regime. He’s trying to protect his friend but it’s awful and cruel and gut-wrenchingly hard to watch the scenes where the comedian is screaming “that’s not what I said!” and the director is frantically whispering “just play along!” at him.

In the end, they go out in front of a heavily coached audience and do a completely harmless show with kazoos and spring snakes and silly costumes. All hope for satire breaks down and they give exactly the show the government minders wanted, because it’s the only thing they can do. Subversiveness wouldn’t be clever; it might be fatal. Instead of getting away with something, they end up hating themselves and violating their own principles. They came to mess around with a silly weird country that doesn’t know how ridiculous it is, and instead they found themselves surrounded by very serious and real and terrifying oppression.

The Red Chapel isn’t funny, and totally fails to satirize or expose or change anything, and that’s why it’s the only good comedy about North Korea.
