post-game, most likely. the basics are easy because i've played a lot of characters like this, but that's kind of the problem, as well. could anyone talk about a few unique-to-jade things that i should probably be keeping in mind while i play him?

First off, props to you for playing Jade! He's one of the most difficult characters to get a grip on, so props to you for giving him a shot.

So. Like so many other characters from this game, you have to be really careful finding the boundaries of his assholery. With Jade in particular, you also have to be mindful of the types of mean comments he makes. There's no formula to it but when he's being a bastard, it's typically because he's either being snarky, or he's refusing to mince words.

Starting with the snarky stuff, the most important thing to remember is that he doesn't ever waste time or derail the party with with his quips. Whatever bitter snarky comments he might have he keeps a lid on whenever things are dangerous or require finesse to navigate (examples: holding Arietta hostage, all the times he's giving orders on the Tartarus, pretty much every conversation he has with Van). He's not really the sort to wisecrack; he does sometimes, but it's not his modus operandi and it almost exclusively happens during the 'downtime' between important plot points. Like when they're milling about the cities and running around beating up mooks. Again, it's not to say that he never has a smartass comment during a serious moment, but he shouldn't be the second coming of Peter Parker.

The comments that are blunt come more from the fact that Jade abhors wasting time. He's not going to sugarcoat things when doing so would slow them down. But it's important to remember that his bluntness isn't intentionally upsetting. He does upset people with his comments, and he knows it. He just doesn't particularly give a shit because he's a swell guy like that. He's a very cold and logical person at heart. He knows this, he embraces this, and he doesn't try to change who he is for the sake of anyone else.

That said, this doesn't mean he's cruel (unless Dist is around, and even then it's not just pure sadism). Just blunt, socially stunted, petty, and way too smart for his own good.
