What the fuck? If that's right and it's the randomized option, the mods should have really made that clearer because in that case I would have definitely not gone with either. :/

Re: 'EITHER' ROLLCALL

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
i doubt either is random or they would have said something

Re: 'EITHER' ROLLCALL

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Dunno, if they thought it was as obvious as above anon ... I mean they should have, I just don't know them well enough to say for sure they'd have thought of that.

Re: 'EITHER' ROLLCALL

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
i don't know anyone who assumed either would be random other than that anon, so i'm assuming it's not

Re: 'EITHER' ROLLCALL

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
why would it be random...? it's a no preference question. you'll either get something that fits, or something that conflicts, not a random dice roll monster.

Re: 'EITHER' ROLLCALL

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
You won't apparently, as proven by various anons in this thread that put either and got neither. So it seems it's kind of random after all even if it was never intended that way. Huh.

Re: 'EITHER' ROLLCALL

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
tbh i think you guys just aren't accounting for the fact that the mods apparently have their own criteria. some monsters are obvious, some aren't. "i can't figure this out" =/= "it's random!"

Re: 'EITHER' ROLLCALL

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
So they could give a super quick explanation?

Re: 'EITHER' ROLLCALL

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
no thanks. the mystery makes it more fun.

Obviously not for everyone, duh.

Re: 'EITHER' ROLLCALL

well, it's still a game mechanic, so.

+1

Re: 'EITHER' ROLLCALL

That's not a game mechanic, that's bullshitting. They're making up excuses to be random/"secret" when they feel like it, but that's not at all what they've been communicating prior to the opening of the game. It makes the lists completely useless.

Re: 'EITHER' ROLLCALL

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
you joined the game knowing you'd get a monster based on a secret list of traits the mods pick from tho. it's right there in the information.

Re: 'EITHER' ROLLCALL

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
They should just admit it's random. Everything's phrased in a way that suggests they may bullshit the choice if they wanna, but hey write a list with traits anyway it's totally going to make a difference.

Just come out and be honest, mods. It's random and that's okay.

Re: 'EITHER' ROLLCALL

you are so asshurt over their method right now...

Re: 'EITHER' ROLLCALL

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Because there is no method. Just looks like there is so people don't whine about not having any influence whatsoever. Which in the end they don't have anyway, but at least it looks like it from the outside.

I don't think you know what "random" means. That would mean they threw everyone into the RNG, which is not what happened (there are way too many coincidences for that).

Random =/= "I couldn't game the system to get the exact one I wanted"

but anon, my character is athletic and hates eating corn. the monster they were assigned is clearly a corn-loving nerd. i know this in my heart.

Re: 'EITHER' ROLLCALL

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
The lists shouldn't even be necessary, imo. People claim they're okay with almost any monster and yet so many seem to still be trying to veer the results toward their favorites.

Re: 'EITHER' ROLLCALL

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
It worked for some! Not for others. The lists are utter bullshit.

Re: 'EITHER' ROLLCALL

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would you want it to be so black and white? Fits or conflicts I get. But to have either only be one or the other? I picked either because I didn't want one or the other. I wanted neither. I didn't want a monster that fit him and I didn't want one that totally conflicted.

Re: 'EITHER' ROLLCALL

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Then that option should be called neither, though. Because either and neither aren't the same thing. :O

IDK man it seemed clear to me that you could either ask for your character's choice to be fitting, NOT fitting, or that you'd be okay with anything. There's also the fact that taking opt-outs into account, the most 'obvious' choices for the character might not have been available. Either way, not specifying 'fitting' or 'unfitting' makes it seem pretty clear that the people picking it should have been okay with ANY of the monsters not listed in their opt-outs.

If you really wanted something that fit strictly into the 'fitting' or 'unfitting' categories, it seems like you probably should have specified one or the other.

But I'm not claiming to know how the mods picked things, so whether it's actually random or not, I have no idea. That said (and I'm going into stuff I'm seeing mentioned above here, not specifically what you said in your comment), I definitely don't like the idea of the mods publicizing the list. It's unnecessary, unfair to the original appers (who had no point of reference except for the bestiary while developing their trait lists), and goes against the premise of the game, which is that the monsters are mod-selected and that you shouldn't be able to game the system by knowing what traits result in what monster.

It's already fairly simple to stack the odds just by picking your opt-outs carefully, specifying 'fitting' or 'unfitting', and looking at the bestiary for specific traits brought up in the entries. No, it's not a foolproof system, and if you're aiming for ONE MONSTER ONLY you're probably sunk, but all of those things can help narrow down your options. Asking for more would frankly make it a cakewalk and the mods have been clear from the get-go that the monster selections were never supposed to be obvious or predictable.

Mentioned in the thread BELOW, I should say. Reading comprehension is low tonight, sorry.
