I don't think going "Well Nagisa is comic relief, it's okay for him to be a huge jerk!" is really okay.

Yes. A few of my friends and I regularly tease and insult each other, way worse than Nagisa does to Rei or Nitori (because aside from calling them weird or boring every now and then he... doesn't actually insult or tear into them). We've been friends for 10+ years, and even got along again immediately after we weren't able to see each other for a few years. We aren't bullying and abusing each other because we're just joking around, and every single one of this knows this.

Look, you can make a point that Nagisa is crossing boundaries with Nitori, because the two of them barely know each other. He's being outright scandalous in how he addresses him so casually and gets up in his personal space. But Nagisa doesn't insult him, doesn't hit or otherwise physically hurt him, and doesn't try to intimidate him into going along with his bullshit. Nagisa has a bossy, forceful, friendly, cheerful, non-malicious personality and approach to dealing with other people. He's an obnoxious idiot but he's not cruel.

You can still be a bully without hitting or threatening someone. Mocking or making fun of someone can still be damaging, even if the party making fun of someone doesn't know they are being mean.

Okay, since this isn't getting through to you, let's try it from a different angle.

Name one instance where Nagisa A) poked fun a genuine sensitive spot one of his friends had and B) didn't immediately back off when they got genuinely upset about it.

Insisting on calling Gou 'Gou'?

Must as I dislike Nagisa, though, I don't think that counts when, with the exception of Makoto, literally every other character in the series including her own brother and apparent best friend also calls her 'Gou'.

She's also stopped correcting anyone about that.

You clearly have, and it's fucked up your perception of actual friendship.

Nagisa doesn't 'tear into' people. His comments aren't meant to hurt. Heck, there's barely any instances where people's feelings are actually hurt.

You still haven't given a single example of this actually happening in canon.

some things like Nagisa laughing at Rei in a mean way or other more overt things like him shoving Nitori mean different things to different people. obviously most people watching the show think it's funny or don't see it the same way that I do.

As much as you wanna tar me and call me "tumblr-offended" It's a valid opinion for me to be just a little bit uncomfortable with Nagisa's actions.

translation: "i lost this argument so i will claim it's all ~subjective~ to get away with my nagisa bashing, my victim complex and my kinda creepy projection on a fictional character"

And I asked you subjectively what moments you think count as Nagisa being mean. I'm honestly curious, because I keep seeing "weh he's mean" on tumblr or the kink meme and other places without anyone actually giving examples of what they consider Nagisa being mean. In contrast, I can think of lots of times Nagisa could easily have been mean, but wasn't (like when Rei bellyflops during his first attempt at swimming), and can't really think of instances where he went over the line.

Don't move the goalposts, you baby. You've spent this entire thread arguing that Nagisa's actions are inherently mean and meant to cause harm and you're only claiming subjectivity now because you realized you were full of shit. No one is denying your right to dislike Nagisa or be uncomfortable. But quit pretending that you aren't projecting your own issues onto a fucking cartoon.

But I'm not projecting, though. anyone who shaves someone else is pretty clearly a bully! Especially when you consider Nitori's reaction to it!

But just in case: you can really only call it bullying if he continues to do it despite Nitori's obvious discomfort. Or are you seriously trying to claim that you've never once accidentally been too rough with one of your friends because you were excited?

This? Would be an example of an opinion that you have that's not valid. It's not well-founded, sound, reasonable, or defensible. There is nothing to support your claim beyond you happening to feel something really strongly.
