Get over it, nerds

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

should preface this by saying i'm american.

more Scandinavian than Chavez. as nice as a true socialist state would be, with complete control of production in the hands of the workers, it's unfeasible to expect anything of the sort to happen in this lifetime. i'm more about a very strong federal government providing for the citizens' basic needs, primarily in the form of a guaranteed minimum income, universal health care, cheap housing, childcare assistance, birth control, heating & cooling, and so on.

this would necessitate greatly-increased taxation on the wealthy, probably all the way back up to 90% or higher, so needless to say, i don't expect any of it to be anything but a pipe dream unless there's a catastrophic upheaval in the US political system.

I'm curious, what's defined as wealthy in that scenario? Is it the same one you normally hear now in reference to raise taxes or a different one?

there would be a progressive taxation system in place, just like today. there's no cut-off line where you go from poor -> middle class -> rich as all hell. barely make above the gmi, you won't pay much, but if you're making seven, eight figures a year, much of that is getting taxed.

do you see a way to keep the wealthy from leaving the country if that level of taxes ever happened, or is this more an aspiration than a plan?

oh, yes, there's a way to keep them here: call their bluff.

the wealthy won't leave, the idea that the JERB CREATORZ will leave en masse if they're taxed is right wing propaganda. the US is a nation of 300+ million that consumes at a rate of ten times that, and even if their ludicrous profits are greatly reduced, they'd still be making shitloads, even with their tax loopholes shut down.

and those very few that do leave? they won't be missed, the superwealthy are more of a drain on the economy on anything else with their tendency to hoard wealth rather than spend it. they'll be replaced by entrepreneurs and others more than willing to take their places, their factories will be sold to new owners, and practically nothing will change. meanwhile, the fleeing rich will find the rest of the world not exactly so conducive to their american lifestyle, they can either enjoy other socialist countries or have fun going to places like somalia, where the markets are truly free.
