Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

To turn the "video games are toys" argument around, I agree that it's slightly weird to have no interest in a major part of what makes a game enjoyable and still want to play from it. There are only a few games where story is such a large part and gameplay is so minimal/outright bad (e.g. Telltale adventure games) that you honestly DO get most of the experience from a LP. Of course ultimately nobody really cares if you're IC.

the problem is that gameplay so often has so very little to do with the story

like there's nothing you're missing in terms of chracterization/plot by not beign able to play the game

I think people in this thread are conflating gameplay with just battles when it also includes stuff like the atmosphere (even jrpgs, which are notoriously cutscene reliant, let you run through cities and the like). But that's a tangent; the confused feelings mostly come through on why you would be interested in the plot at all (and the most insulting/wankgate answer to this would be wanting pretty looking self-insert a la That Soma).

Or the shittons of terrible Roxas/Axels back on lj. Those were the days.

In this case I agree that you almost always have to play the games in order to roleplay in a game's setting. LPers will miss all the little details that you will be able to observe by actually walking around in a 3D space and exploring yourself.

Story and characters though? Not that necessary.
