The shitty life advice brigade

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

Don't listen to them, I actually made the same mistake myself because the big bold "language barrier is in effect" announcement confused me. I felt like it was implying that there was an overall language barrier (as in the newbies couldn't understand anyone who didn't speak the same language as them.) Their placement of where they put the "TDM 2.0" note in the translator post was confusing too, as it was followed by "So how is my character supposed to communicate?" It wasn't until I read a little more closely (and realized that that "charades" question had been there in the past) that I realized they only meant characters from Earth who didn't speak English wouldn't get translated because they didn't have the "Earth" language packs.

While eventually I parsed it, that still could have been made more clear.

Ayup, I made this exact same mistake too, right down to thinking the bolded message meant no translation period. The mods have a good handle on just about everything else but their relaying of information in a clear fashion could use some work.

I also may be in the minority here, but I really don't care too much about fictional technology and all the minutia associated with it. There's a balance to be struck between keeping things interesting and keeping things coherent and at the end of the day, I'd rather just be able to play without drowning in ten tons of extraneous detail weighing me down.

The mods are absolutely shit at communicating. This is the biggest problem of the game.

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2014-05-27 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
nice try, but no, they're not. there's a small percentage of the playerbase that just seems to have its head too far up its ass to be able to parse together a proper sentence. when the majority of the game isn't having an issue, it's not the game, it's you.

How are we even defining "small percentage"? Or "majority"? Because if multiple people are finding your information unclear it's also possible that it's, you know, unclear, and not a PEBKAC scenario.

I personally wouldn't go as far as to say the mods are shit at communicating, it's obvious they're making an effort, but there's really no need to assume that every single person reading something that's ambiguously or confusingly worded the wrong way is a moron.

i'm defining it statistically. if you go by the numbers, there are less people complaining about issues, whether they're valid or not (i'm not saying esls shouldn't have a problem figuring out some of it and i'm not calling them stupid for needing help), than there are people just playing the game and enjoying it. that's the small/majority grasp there. if everyone on my timeline were having problems and we all ground to a stop because 'we can't finish/go on until we get this part figured out', yes, that's a problem that needs to be addressed. if it's statistically a small percentage of the game (anywhere from 1-20 individuals complaining), then maybe they just need to stop complaining and turn to someone who seems to be getting it and asking them for a little help.

i think the playerbase is expecting too much handholding. i think there's a segment of people that signed on because this is the new shiny and they bit off more than they could chew. i think some of those same people didn't understand they couldn't SoL their way through this game and that they'd actually have to actively participate in events. and i think some of those same people are a very vocal minority that try to stir shit and dump it all on the shoulders of the mods, who i'm not whiteknighting. i'm merely pointing out that it's really fucking easy to shift blame onto an invisible party than it is to look at what you did and go 'shit, maybe i should have read that more instead of skimming'.

i read the tdm and the linked posts more than once. i don't know anyone in the game so i couldn't ask them. someone posting here for clarification and then getting back "LEARN TO READ" "SHUT UP IDIOT" "WE DON'T WANT YOU IN THE GAME" is hardly encouraging. i understand you guys have had issues with people not reading properly in the past but bear in mind that some people on the tdm are new to the game and weren't around for all that, and may want to check before they post incorrectly and get accused of being an illiterate dumbass (though it still happens apparently). all the rude-ass, condescending anons you guys have in these threads are really off-putting. none of you seem excited about the game, you seem angry and rude and it's weird.

when you have ex-liz clique cronies and notorious flakes and wankers floating around i'm not really surprised the anon threads have taken a nasty tone myself

just take it in stride, anon. you're not dumb for asking a question or getting confused about something and not everyone will jump down your throat for it. i'd just stay away from these threads until the game popularity calms down some and they get bored poking at others.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-27 07:50 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, i think that's what i'll do. thanks anon!

best advice i can give you is to just go to the mods next time. consignment threads are quick to get nasty no matter what you do.

okay, anon, i can appreciate your situation and that it's different, but look up at the thread. read the whole thing. there's that 'vocal minority' trying to spout out that the mods are assholes who can't communicate for shit and that's going to engender someone like me who's enjoying the game and hasn't had any problems so far to go 'hey, fuck you'. it wouldn't be directed at you and i think asking for clarification is fine and i wasn't even making fun of that or pointing out that it was bad, but with the last month of wg and rpanons posts having people going full pants on the head over it, i'll apologize for assuming that while you might have had good intentions in asking for clarification, that others were here just to stir shit and be bitter bettys.

just ask the mods next time. they tend to answer FAQs regularly, i've never had to wait longer than a couple days get answers from them.

they stopped answering questions on plurk afaik, which has made some buttbabies super mad that they have to actually go to the faq page and wait a bit longer for an answer. oh the humanity.

Re: +1

which is exactly what they should have done. not everyone has plurk and we've all seen the actual information plurks get turned into 300+ comments of inane chatter. everyone IS on the game and therefore can read the FAQ or ooc comm, so that's exactly where things should be put/answered. putting anything on plurk or even having a plurk account is a courtesy, not a requirement.

frankly? i think what you're seeing is just a symptom of whatever's happened to dwrp at large.

consignment is just the big thing right now, so it's brought a lot of dwrpers together.
