The shitty life advice brigade

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

...okay, as one of those vet travelers, i'm going to let you in on a secret. there's almost no *actual* pregame plotting that's happened. it's like, one or two events, maybe. if you have a Vet traveler and want in, hit any of us up, we will make it work. stuff hasn't been played out, it's totally malleable. if you have someone who's new... well. i don't know. at that point you're complaining about a game mechanic you had the option of taking advantage of yourself.

IDK about anyone else who apped in last app round, but I didn't actually realize it was possible to use that mechanic until well after I was accepted and had already started playing. It's not actually stated on the app or in the FAQ that you can have a character come in having been a Veteran. The only places it's made clear, as far as I can tell, are on the Acquired Skills and Previous Universes pages, both of which are presented in a way that suggests they're not actually relevant reading for people not in the game yet.

(There is the question about what to do with Veterans in future app rounds, but that wasn't answered until the day after apps closed, and really isn't all that informative to people who don't already know what's going on with that.)

Belatedly, I realize that this might sound like I'm bitching about not being let into the cool kids club, which I'm honestly not. I probably wouldn't have taken advantage of the mechanic even if I had known about it, because there's a lot to get straight without playing a character who should really know about this shit by now. I just don't think it's really reasonable to be sniping at people for not taking advantage of a mechanic they may not have even known about because it's really not at all well documented. It's that sort of attitude that does lead to newbies feeling shut out, because it presupposes an understanding of the game's overall framework that someone just coming in probably hasn't managed to gain yet.

Anon, the mechanic is listed in your Acceptance email.

Acceptance email. Which comes after you'e apped and gotten in. It's the sort of mechanic someone might want to be clear on a little bit before then.

And before you go off on me I did app in as a veteran in the first round and wasn't sure how or if veterans would work in the future, so it is something that can be made more explicit.

okay, decent point. someone poke a mod and they'll probably put it in the FAQ.

actually I might as well do that myself.

well, my bad in thinking it was more explicitly stated than that. i apped in when the game started, and thought it was a pretty obvious option, but that might have been a combination of test drive things and people just flat out discussing it, i guess.
