Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

I think part of the problem was that the information about the translation capabilities in general was a bit too scattered and came piecemeal. A lot of questions about what was translated and how was answered in the mod plurk before it was ever put in a post.

As a result, pretty much everyone ended up with a different idea of how the translation process worked. Partial translations, no translations, tech failure, complete translations, some people got the subtitle/voiceover part but some didn't, etc.

It's an opening plot that they admitted hadn't been tailored for a game the size and speed that CDC opened at. This was pretty much a trial run and I'm sure that it will go more smoothly next time we all have to play charades (and like others said, CR will be mostly established by then, too which should help a lot).

it didn't help that even when the mods asked for players not to ask questions on the modplurk people asked on the modplurk anyway

wait, they asked people not to ask questions on the modplurk?

i missed that in all the spam on the modplurk

I think they outright stated it pretty recently and it's gotten better since then. They've also started disabling comments on some modplurks. It seems to be working out all right since more important stuff isn't getting lost in the shuffle now and important questions go on DW instead of the modplurk.

if you look at the bottom of the first entry linked you'll find links to detailed mod updates, all spaced a week apart. the translator modpost especially came up a week before the drop logs were even posted.

this isn't a case of info being scattered or piecemeal. it's a case of annoyingly lazy players not taking the fucking time to read.

Personally, I understood the language thing for the most part? But I was following the mod plurk and the OOC announcements pretty closely. It's also possible that people read the detailed information but it got blurry after two weeks of playing.

I definitely saw a lot of general confusion about how the language system worked, and had trouble getting it across to people when explaining it myself. I'm not sure why, but it seems like a lot of people just had difficulty understanding or remembering the details despite actually reading everything.

that's not the mods' fault though, that's on players for asking other confused players for clarification instead of asking the mods

yeah, and when everyone is playing it slightly differently, it is incredibly difficult to keep track of it.

i know where the mod docs are, i check them all the time, i ask the mods when i'm not sure of stuff? but when other people say or play wrong things you tend to internalise it

I definitely think it was mostly confusion and poor communication on the players' end, but I do agree that it might have been too much information and too complicated a system to jump into right off the bat. I had fun with it, though, and I know others did too.

But it's a fact that everyone was pretty much threading a slightly different version of how the translating worked. I just sort of tried my best to go along with whatever was established in the poster's thread.

exactly, you can't contradict ic, and you don't want to ask the other player "are you sure you have this right", so you just go with it. and mistakes get embedded

i would much rather people pointed out my mistakes but that doesn't seem to be how things are done. we're still having fun though
