Except Conchita isn't non-binary either. Conchita uses "she" onstage as part of a drag persona and off stage Conchita is a cis man.

tumblr and shit really need to catch the fuck up because it's annoying as hell. i'm non-binary and their shit is the actual worst. you don't get to decide someone's gender for them; i thought that was the whole point of this shit to begin with

A couple of them are trying to be "understanding" because "oh, well, a lot of people are uneducated about the non-binary aspect of transness" and I'm like, even if someone is non-binary, if they say they're not trans, they're not. Conchita was even super respectful of a fellow performer who IS a transgender person.

It depends, I think. There are some non-binary people who consider themselves transgender because they don't identify as male or female and some who don't consider themselves transgender for the same reason because they don't have a gender to "transition" to or from, which IIRC, was what the term transgender originally meant.

I wish I could say this surprises me, but considering how often those people insist that crossdressing must mean you're transgender, it's not very surprising at all. Of course they'd conflate drag personas with someone's actual identity too.

How the fuck are they getting "erasure" from this, though? Maybe if it was someone other than Conchita going "oh yeah Wurst's cis," but it's not, ffs. If there's any erasure going on here, it's those people insisting that someone's chosen identity is actually something other than what that person says it is.

It's people assuming that by speaking about about her own identity (which they assumed was non-binary and not trans) Conchita was invalidating the identities of non-binary people who do consider themselves trans.

NGL, I always thought that trans referred to someone who was transitioning/had transitioned from their assigned gender to their identified gender.

See, I'm NB, and if you ask me that's still bullshit. They're the ones that were making assumptions about Conchita. It would've taken maybe a few minutes to find out that she's the drag persona of a cis guy called Tom Neuwirth who came up with the persona as a reaction and statement about discrimination, especially since this isn't even the first time he's gone on stage as Conchita.

Trans = identifies as something other than their assigned sex, experiences gender dysphoria because of that. That's about it. Most trans people want to transition, but it's not an option for everyone and being mid- or post-transition isn't a requirement for being trans.

Neuwirth literally got the name for his Conchita persona from a Cuban friend. As in, she gave him that name.

Would it kill these people to actually get their facts right if they're going to complain? Digging for (not even correct!) reasons to attack someone who picked up that persona in the first place to make a statement against discrimination of minorities is pretty fucking shitty.
