A couple of them are trying to be "understanding" because "oh, well, a lot of people are uneducated about the non-binary aspect of transness" and I'm like, even if someone is non-binary, if they say they're not trans, they're not. Conchita was even super respectful of a fellow performer who IS a transgender person.

waaait how can someone be non-binary but not trans? would this person be intersex? [i dont know much about that subject in particular but i DO know a person is trans if they don't identify with the gender they were assigned at birth]

It depends, I think. There are some non-binary people who consider themselves transgender because they don't identify as male or female and some who don't consider themselves transgender for the same reason because they don't have a gender to "transition" to or from, which IIRC, was what the term transgender originally meant.

non-binary means your gender expression (or in some cases your gender identity) doesn't fall under the usual "gender binary" of what is considered male and female

non-binary people whose gender expression is not typical of their sex can still identify as cis if they want

non-binary people that IDENTIFY as a gender that isn't strictly male or female are trans

the important distinction to remember is that gender expression and gender identity are two different things. gender identity is how you identify (whether you consider yourself a man, woman, or a mix of both). gender expression is how you look/what clothes you wear/etc.

nnnnnoooo, nonbinary means your gender identity doesn't fall under the gender binary. that's the whole point. it's a gender identity.

if it was gender expression that defined if you're nonbinary or not then literally anyone whose appearance isn't stereotypically masculine/feminine would be nonbinary. dude in a skirt? nonbinary. girl in a suit? nonbinary. full-out crossdresser? nonbinary.

that's not how it works. it's your identity that matters, not how you present.

atypical gender expression does not a nonbinary make, anon

with the flood of new labels and pronouns for every possible permutation of gender identity and sexuality, i'm surprised that you still have to be either cis or trans

it can't be about the body dysphoria because there's no body or set of genitals that corresponds to non-binary gender (intersex, maybe, but that's still male and female genitals, albeit in varying configurations, and i thought the point of non-binary was being neither male nor female)

actually, it's possible for nonbinary people to have dysphoria (at least the neutral identities, idk about intersex/bigender)! it's still triggered by sexual characteristics (mainly genitalia or breasts from what i've seen) but instead of wanting a body with the sexual characteristics of the opposite sex, they want a neutral one entirely lacking them.

oh thank you for explaining.

but, then, nb people without this dysphoria would not be trans? this is what i mean, could they not be neither cis nor trans?

they'd be cis if they had a neutral body. if their gender identity doesn't match their body, they're trans by default.

claiming they're nb without dysphoria's usually a warning sign that they're latching on to a term for attention ime, but it's possible that they just don't feel enough dysphoria to recognize it as that or smth.

i was about to swoop in and say this

also i'm bigender and i have a shitton of dysphoria it's just not a full-time gig for me (but i also don't necessarily have the same configuration as every other person who identifies as bigender so who knows).

yeah this is how it works for me

i experience dysphoria and discomfort with things typically associated with femininity and am faab but i don't think fully physically transitioning with stuff like hormones would solve any of my problems or give me the answers i seek in order to be fully comfortable with my body or how i view myself, but things like passing as male or having people use male pronouns with me now and again and taking on a traditionally male role help a lot.

so yeah your mileage may vary. gender is dumb and weird but embrace it, yo
