Re: Ringabel | Bravely Default

okay major spoilers for the whois part of him so let me span this shit. if you wanna turn it off edit the html on the whole thing and change "transparent" to "black" and "grey" to "transparent" in terms of the settings on it.

SO with ringabel keep in mind he started off as alternis dim and alternis dim's life was AWFUL

he was born and took up hatred and malice as his mantle (his dark knight abilities are a part of him that were turned into an asterisk, not the other way around), and was extremely hateful until the templar saved him. ringabel has a strong capacity for hatred, even if his characterization doesn't make it obvious: because what ringabel does is attaches to things, people, places, ideas, and holds grudges against things that hurt them. ie his hatred mantle came from his hatred of life and living that built up over time. he loved braev/edea like family (moreso with edea despite him being REALLY CREEPY FOR IT) and when they were threatened he flipped his shit, and FLIPPED HIS SHIT MORE WHEN EDEA LANCED THE BOIL THAT WAS HIS FEELINGS. he really REALLY cares about his ideals and the longer they last, the more violently protective he gets over them, even completely going against them in a rage (ie his love for edea)

this isn't all he is. he remembers the events he forgot, and experienced a lot of things as an amnesiac - this has notably mellowed his worldview. however, as he goes on further, you might notice that his womanizing tendencies mellow out considerably. ringabel, as an amnesiac, is a womanizer who's intelligent to a degree, wise, and playful! he likes to suggest sexual things and otherwise hit on girls because that's what he finds fun. he also knows how to play his cards right and generally he's a pretty good conversationalist, no thanks to alternis. a lot of what ringabel is as an amnesiac helps him remain mellow when he regains his memories.

so here's the teal deer without spoilers:
play him and let his flirtatious side take a backseat to seriousness, especially if he has his memories. ringabel misprioritizes women and stuff, yes, but this isn't true at all when he regains his memories (and thus personal priorities beyond women), and he doesn't usually bring up women unless it's a particularly lighthearted moment.

additionally, he's got the capacity to be perceptive, wise, and manipulative; if you didn't get the scene, during your first stay in the Fire Crystal's town, you could sleep in the inn - and Ringabel would call Tiz out on putting on a brave face while he had nightmares about his brother. Ringabel isn't stupid, at least. he can catch a lot of things others miss, or say near him while assuming he's too stupid to really care. and he totally joined the group through manipulation.

what his memories bring back is honor, duty, and hate. ringabel generally stops misprioritizing and gets serious after his memories return - Edea herself calls him on it, noticing he's stopped hitting on her and Agnes in favor of isolating himself or talking to Tiz, whom he trusts and has formed the largest bond with (due to his own "Unacceptable!" behavior around Edea and Agnes at times) in a party chat.

if you need any tip, remember: ringabel is a serious character. read the Book of D's notes if you need his voice: all of the notes are written by him, which is especially obvious if you read the notes on girl bosses and so on. he is not flirtbot 2000, but he's not all seriousness all the time. ringabel's character draws a line between when he can be fun and flirtatious, and when he is serious. and when he regains his memories, that line swings more towards keeping him serious a bit of the time, if not simply calm rather than mildly hedonistic.

Thank you so much, anon! That's the one thing I'm trying to keep in mind-- that he is a fairly serious character, particularly towards the endgame. One thing I'm pondering is which canon point to choose. Amnesiac Ringabel would lack the emotional baggage and hatred from his time as and his But at the same time, I noticed that he still shows serious moments-- the scene with Tiz about his brother is a great example. And I also appreciate how the DeRosa quest shows that, despite his womanizing tendencies, he has limits, particularly in regards to the objectification.

One thought that's crossed my mind is playing him as an amnesiac and then updating him once he's formed a solid CR pool. Depending on when I grab him, it might cause some whiplash (endgame isn't easy on the poor guy). I think it'd be fun to explore how to fit in his real memories with his identity as Ringabel-- I noticed that the party chooses to call him by that name, and he doesn't seem to object. Additionally, would you say it's worth it to consider the

I plan to comb through the book as well as once I finish the game. Again, thanks for the help! You've given a lot of great detail.

I think that Chapter 6's version is perfectly acceptable to use as a history model. It's implied in earlier discussions with the guy, and Ringabel himself never objects, despite by that point having regained his memories. He identifies with that version, and it's more likely he would have questioned it then not, given everything.

With canon points, that's up to you! And yeah, Ringabel has two things I didn't really mention: morality (even with his memory back, thanks to Braev), and he really disassociates with his former self to a big degree. His experiences as Ringabel supercede his experiences as Alternis, and in the period he's been Ringabel, he's personally grown and come to rely on the others around him! I'd say that in his journal, it's implied he helps them all, too. As Alternis, he interacted more with his version of Agnes, Tiz, and Edea, and that might have prompted some personal growth of his own. Basically, we're getting into headcanon with that, though! It's up to you how you wanna go about interpreting his history as we know it, but I'm glad what I said helped.

One last thing: how do you interpret his actions in the true ending? I am... very confused.

Basically, I'm left scratching my head. I doubt I'd grab him post-game to start with, but as I found the true ending much more satisfying, I'm really uncertain of what happened there.
