Unfunny wanky stereotypes

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

does anyone else have misophonia?

i just recently moved in with my parents who inadvertently trigger me and i basically want to kill myself. i have to wear earplugs and headphones and blast music for as long as they're home and awake. they don't know how badly they do it and i don't want to take it out on them, but god damn

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
what noises are they making that are bothering you so much?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
when they talk in a lowered tone of voice either to themselves or each other or on the phone. certain sounds cause instant anger and anxiety, and make me cringe and want to hit something really hard. i bruised my hand once from punching my desk so hard, so i try my best to just keep the earplugs in at all times.

i do and it's a pain in the ass. living somewhere where my neighbors voice/noises are constantly intruding in my personal space pisses me off. same with sirens or really any noise that lets me know there are other people out there borders on pissing me off. loud noises are definitely anger inducing and i had to make sure that i lived on the top floor of where i am so avoid getting triggered (yes, actually triggered) by hearing people stomping around over me.

i can't imagine. weirdly i'm not bothered at all by the usual triggers like chewing noises or scraping, it's just hushed tones with certain consonant sounds.

autism

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
i wish it was that simple because at least then i could either take medication, or i could tell people i had a widely-recognized problem and they'd be more inclined to respect that.

with this shit it's impossible to tell people to stop making mundane noises, and it's also completely unreasonable. it's quite possibly the shittiest neural disorder ever.

how do you know it's not autism?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-02 12:29 am (UTC)(link)

the more you know

(Anonymous) 2014-03-02 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
can't misophonia be a symptom of autism though

(Anonymous) 2014-03-02 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
did you read the article? it's more likely tied with synesthesia than autism. not every neurological sensitivity is automatically 'autism'.

and therapy

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)

shut up and stop being so whiny
they're not obligated to change how they normally talk just to appease your autistic ass
deal with it or move out

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
op didn't say they needed to change though?

guess what, you're allowed to be annoyed by or upset with the things people you live with do, even if they're letting you live with them for free.

and btw op might not be living there for free

Seconding the therapy suggestion. You'll probably have to shop around a bit, but a good doctor should be able to help you develop coping strategies to short-circuit or minimize your reactions.

You should also talk to your family. It's not reasonable to ask them not to make noise around you, but there might be some accommodations they can make (helping you soundproof your space, or to relocate to an area of the house where sound travels less, for example), but even if they can't, you are probably taking your frustration out on them to some degree without being conscious of it, and they deserve to know why.
