general: playing "trolls"

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
one of my latest characters is a huge troll in canon, but I'm interested in getting them into a game. when people name drop the type of characters they hate, trolls come up often so what are so dos and don'ts? or any kind of advice?

think characters like beato, hazama, yukari, etc.

In general, don't try to make the character "win" conversations all the time. They might always come out looking like roses when they troll people in their canon, but that's an author-controlled environment where they're being specifically set up as the winner in advance. In RP you have to be a lot more flexible. Let other people surprise or stump them sometimes, and make it clear that they're surprised or stumped in narration (even if they play it cool and/or stomp off when that happens.) That'll tone down a lot of the more irritating aspects of "troll" CR.

Remember that troll types usually aren't 100% about verbal aggression; there's an element of wit and trickery. Calling other characters stupid and mocking their efforts (especially if they're limited by setting or mod fiat not to be able to succeed at something) can easily leave the players feeling offended or as though they're being accused of being OOC. I recommend leaning more towards manipulation and word games, if that's IC for the character you're considering. (Convincing a gullible shonen hero that a monster is actually a new character = fun for you and the other player, who now gets to run with that idea. Sniping at a tough superpowered military man because he can't punch the jamjar gods in the face = frustrating for the other player, who is oocly unable to do anything with that other than stew.)

Be open to negative CR, and make it clear that you're open to negative CR -- some people don't want that, and it might be a good idea to have a plotting/permissions post for the more negative aspects of your character's interactions. There's always a huge group of people in a game who have 'nicer' characters and are pining for a good IC rivalry, so fill up your dance card with people who want to thread with an abrasive troll instead of wasting your time with people who don't want that thread and are annoyed at having to deal with it. If someone puts up a post and it's PERFECT for your character to drop a snarkbomb on, but you don't know whether they'd be oocly uncomfortable with snarkbombing, ask!

And don't let the complainers scare you off. Like any character type, you can go wrong with trolls, and the ones people complain about are the ones who do it wrong -- but they can be a hell of a lot of fun, not just to play but to play against, when the player approaches it with care.

thank you, this is very helpful. I think being vocal about negative CR will be a good approach. I'll keep an eye out during my game's next CR meme, see if there's anyone specifically looking for it and then try to preemptively plot with them before I bring the character in.

Seconding the anon above, but with a few extra pointers.

Don't be afraid of being a jerk in character or even of targetting 'innocents' who are attached to the sort of characters or even the specific characters they go after specifically in canon. Depending on how they're a dick, associated people are going to get the sharp end of the stick too. Of course, this goes in hand with what the anon said, be clear with the interactions you're going for, since it's much more easier to make people feel uncomfortable when you're playing this kind of character than otherwise.

On the other side of things, again, depending on the character, they aren't going to be a dick to everyone they meet. Even this kind of character need positive CR. Depending on the game you're sending the character you have in mind to, their motivations and who they'll be a jerk to will change, especially if their survival or comfort depends on it. Depending on how they work, they'll be wanting to try and get a support network going, lackeys. Maybe even friends.

Don't forget about your characters motivations or goals! It's much easier to have a gameplan with the above when you know what they want (or don't want) out of what the game has available. Combine the two in ways you'll personally get a kick out of.

Most importantly of all, have fun. Don't let yourself feel too restricted by the need to play nice in game, or like you have to minimize or take out the elements that make the character who they are. Don't be afraid to poke fun at the character if it's the sort of thing you'd do.

And don't forget, when you're playing a troll, OOC communication becomes extra important, and that's where you want to be friendly. If you're the sort of person who minimizes OOC communication with other players, you might want to consider opening up a bit more depending on what the out of game atmosphere there is like.
