why do people always call you a 'dudebro' just because you don't care about the plot in the video game?

it's not like im opposed to the idea of plot in a video game, but 90% of the time video game plots are boring and poorly implemented. You're writing a game, not a movie - the gameplay and plot should work together, at least a little, but I can't name all that many games that actually take advantage of their medium to get even the smallest bits of plot across.

because dudebro is to vidya as neckbeard is to dwrp

they're both descriptive and offensive insults that you can throw at anybody for any reason you want, whether or not they're actual dudebros/neckbeards

I respectfully disagree. I like heavy plot games like Xenosaga far more than anything else.

I tend to find the gameplay/battles in a game to be the most boring part, so I have a hard time in games that expect you to spend time grinding for levels between plot events. Im always rushing for the story to continue.

And that's fair enough, I was just expressing my own opinion.

I wouldn't insult you for only really playing games for story, so why would you (not you specifically, just a general you) insult me for only caring about gameplay? There are a few games where I've cared about the plot, but not many.

+1

I tend to most like games that I can enjoy the way I enjoy a book/movie/yadda yadda, with the gameplay as just another way to interact with the concepts/story/characters. If I don't really give a damn about what's happening, I don't invest in continuing unless the gameplay is insanely fun (like in Katamari Damacy, though even if it isn't story-driven it benefits from having a lot of character) and/or multiplayer.

i guess because typical xbox live dudebros mostly play first person shooters or sandbox games that have a lot of action but not lot of plot, and they sneer at scripted jpgs where the gameplay tends to be mediocre and heavy on level grinding.

ideally, gameplay and story should work together, but i guess i'm more willing to forgive bad gameplay than the lack of an interesting story. if i have to beat 100 monsters to get to the next bit of story, okay, that's boring, but if i'm interested in the story then it's just something i have to do. if there's no story, then it might as well just be a puzzle game - something that will occupy my interest for an hour at a time at most.

you do realize that tons of 'dudebros' play and enjoy dragon age and mass effect, which has tons of RPG elements, scripting, and dialogue? A lot of them also fondly remember Final Fantasy 7.

The 'dudebros' you're talking about don't actually exist, at least not in the way most people seem to define them.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
My brother played through Dragon Age and, I shit you not, didn't realize you could romance your companions because he never stopped to talk to them or engage in any dialogue that wasn't forced by moving the game forward. Just because games have something there doesn't mean it will be used.

Also the "dudebro" love of Final Fantasy 7 is almost entirely nostalgia based, I would imagine. The landscape of gaming was very different at the time.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
... and? even if you only engage in the forced plot/dialogue, there's still a lot of it.

the point is that they don't engage with it

they don't care that it exists other than "whose face do i beat in for the maximum shits and giggles"

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
you have a very limited scope of the population of people who play video games don't you

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
so do you

everybody's an individual. There are just as many 'dudebros' who hate RPGs as 'dudebros' who like them.

In b4 "halo doesn't have a plot"

(Anonymous) 2014-01-18 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, as a fan, it can be really difficult to tell sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-18 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe if you only play multi.

Point is, huge western titles like Halo do have plots. You may not think its a good plot, but it is there and it is present throughout the series. Those games are just the ones people like to peg as plotless dudebro shooters and not as deep as *their* favorite rpgs, because the multiplayer aspect is so popular. They don't even give it a fair shot.

I like to tell people to read the books.

Bungie's worldbuilding is so lovely and expansive and the games suck in that they dont explain nearly as much as the books do.

Also I love seeing Chief's thought process because a lot goes on that he, as the stoic silent type, doesnt say aloud. I felt Halo 4 brought some of it to light but they gotta work on that.

Someone needs to introduce OP to Marathon.

tbh JRPGs are probably have a lot of the best examples of "plot that's not very smart or well written and doesn't even bother integrating with the gameplay" like OP was talking about.
