You basically just described Regina Mills from Once Upon a Time with all three of those to varying degrees.

And she also has powers.

- Painwheel from Skullgirls (wears a literal mask but anyway, starves for freedom and misses her old life but comes off as an incoherently insane killing machine)

starved for affection types that want to make friends but are held back by insecurity, fear, and so on
- Rue from Princess Tutu (kidnapped as a baby, was manipulatively raised being told that no one could ever truly like her except her "father"/kidnapper, pretends that the reason she's so aloof is because she's too confident to bother with people instead of the opposite - come to think of it she's all three to a certain extent)

bitter betties with fucked up priorities that manage to be at least adequately personable
- Morrigan from Dragon Age (witch who lives in the wilderness, raised to look out for number one/be a survivalist who looks down on softheartedness, has a sense of humor and doesn't mind being around with people as long as they don't get too close for comfort)

I'm probably nowhere near done yet but dammit I just have to wake up first, I like these types too.

i have skullgirls on steam (need to get it on a console tho because oh god, my poor fingers) and i have princess tutu downloaded, so i will look into these ladies!

and i love morrigan but i think leliana is more my type, if that helps.

for 1... Soren from Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn?

It isn't necessarily a 'mask' mask but he pushes people away and tries not to let any of his insecurities show. By the second game he also sort of becomes 3, since he's still bitter and has fucked up priorities (the only person he cares about is Ike, the main character) but he's become decently personable. He even sort of makes a friend besides Ike! Amazing.

Also he has about three plausible yaoi ships, if that's your thing

i'm not super invested one way or another about yaois (if i think a ship is cute, i'll get into it, but i don't seek them out) but i will look into playing these! ty for the suggestions, anon.

If you like anime (there is a manga, too, but the anime is shorter and an easier intro to the canon), all three of those traits in some degree or another apply to a lot of characters Ouran High School Host Club.

It starts out as a parody of a lot of shoujo work, but it actually ends up with a lot of heart and really interesting characters.

i read a looot of ouran back in the day. i'll see about picking it up again! maybe some of the characters will ping me enough to start rping.

Natsume from Natsume Yuujinchou for number 2, and maybe even a little number 1. He's a high schooler whose parents died when he was young and has been passed around by relatives because his ability to see Japanese demons (yokai) makes everyone think he's a liar or just crazy. The whole series is about him becoming closer to yokai and humans through interactions.

Have you ever watched Welcome to the NHK? No powers, but the main trio of characters all have at least one of these traits. To the point where I'm not even sure which one to recommend to you.

atton rand from Knights of the Old Republic II

for the first one: homura akemi and mami tomoe from puella magi madoka magica, a handful of the character from the monogatari series, and maybe minatsuki takami from deadman wonderland if you take her from a really early canon point.

for the second: maybe kougyoku ren from magi? the entire cast of haganai could probably count as this, too, but none of them have powers.

a chunk of the cast of neon genesis evangelion also fits under both the first and second category! a couple of them might fall under the last one, too.

i already play mami and homura is too...what's the word, not aloof but so singlemindedly focused on her Most Important Goal that making her engage with non-castmates/a small handful of people would be more trouble than it's worth for me. (and moemura leaves me p. cold)

i don't think i could pull off anyone from nge, partly because i'd rather not get eaten alive by other fans. but i will definitely look into magi, monogatari, deadman wonderland, and haganai! ty for the suggestions, anon.

For that first one, there's a few people in Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky that fit, which is a very nice little obscure canon. First game should be coming out on Steam soon, but it's been out for PSP for some time. Though I'd recommend waiting until the second game in the series gets localized this summer since that's where you get the backstories for most of the better characters.

Seriously, it's so full of people with traumatic backstories that I'd be better off saying who doesn't fit that mold to some degree. That and it's just a kickass game with some of the best worldbuilding and setting that I've ever seen in a game and deserves to have more people who have at least heard of it.

i actually do have legend of heroes on psp! need to pick it back up again...

can i get away with playing someone from just the first game or do i need to wait for the others to come out in order to get the full picture?

DISREGARD THIS

From Rune Factory 4, Dylas is a tall gruff-looking guy who wants friends but has a lethal combination of bad self-esteem and total social ineptitude. He acts like a grouchy ball of anger but is also completely transparent and a huge sweet loser.

Leon from the same game probably doesn't have the kind of "mask" you're thinking of, but he puts on a huge sassy trickster facade to distract people from the fact that he has problems by teasing the dickens out of them.

Rune Factory 4's kind of a complex canon in that to get the full scoop on these characters (or many of the others) you have to not only go through their romance paths but also play the game long and thoroughly enough to see their day-to-day dialogues and interactions. It might be worth it if you like seeing reasonably nuanced characters living out their daily lives in a JRPG-like world.
