Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. If a game is closing in a year when should it stop accepting applications? Or should it let it be like an open DR and allow characters to come in to participate in the final month or so? Most games so far have abruptly ended with only a few actually going through with their end game plot, so I'm curious what mods and players think about this.

The game that I ran had a set ending and a timeline for that ending when I first opened it. Since I knew when it would happen and I had planned out the entire plot from start to finish, I set a kind of "point of no return" for applications.

When the plot started to come to a head and characters and players became aware that it was then possible to solve the main conflict, I announced how much time was left and ran apps for the last time, while providing an in-plot reason for why people suddenly stopped showing up. This was about three months from endgame, if I'm remembering correctly, and while some people dropped or idled out, it evened itself out by having a core cast of about fifteen or twenty characters that propelled the plot through to the finish.

Then I officially announced the end, though I left the comms open so that everyone could take as long as they wanted for their good-byes. Nowadays I don't think that kind of "surprise" plotting would fly with most players, since the preference seems to be for knowing everything in advance, even if I think some surprises now and then add to the excitement in a game.

It all depends on the game and how receptive it would be to characters coming in during the end game plotting. I would leave them open as long as people wanted if it were my game, and put up a big notice at the top of the apps page saying "THIS GAME IS CLOSING IN X MONTHS" once you start to get within a few months. Let the appers decide if they want to have a whirlwind two months in the game and drop. (I can think of a few characters that I would like to play in the last two months of a game because they'd get involved quickly but would be the type to burn out after more than a few months. It would be the perfect way to play them for a short period without looking like a flake dropping so quickly.)

I also think it depends on what the end game plot is. Is it something that will require some investment into the game either via plot involvement or having CR? Or could a new character easily jump in and get involved?

No matter what you decide on it, if apps will be closing for good, make sure the players have at least a month's notice on it.
