Is there really anything the established characters don't understand that doesn't have to do with the time and dimensional travel? Everything else, it seems at least a few people have an idea of what's going on, they're just sitting on the information.

The time and dimensional travel is the source of most of the questions that come up. And there's a lot of history stuff we don't really know for sure, like how exactly the war went down, what's up with the ship, why there are dinosaurs everywhere (other than that they're awesome). There are lots of mysteries that the metaplot has yet to yield up.

IIRC, the dinosaurs were explained as being in research parks before the war, and then escaping when things went to shit.

Oh, right, my bad! (...So the answer is basically because dinosaurs are cool--according to scientists in the decadent and shiny past. And there's nothing wrong with that.)
