where, when he's talking to misato by the water at the end of the episode? in the versions of episode 24 that i have, they kept those lines in. shinji says: "kaworu said that he loved me. i've never felt such kindness before. he was like me, and he was like ayanami. i liked him, too," which tones it down on shinji's end ("like" vs "love"), but i don't see where it's being cut altogether. am i missing something here?

Shinji's lines in the sub are "Kaworu-kun told me "I love you". To me! For the first time... that was the first time I heard those words. He looked like me. And Ayanami. ...I loved him too."

The dub paints Kaworu like some strange ethereal gay boy by swapping Shinji's words with "I've never felt such kindness before" and "I liked him too". When in fact the sub shows that their love was mutual.

the problem is that shinji uses "suki," which doesn't literally mean love in japanese but context and the way he phrases it makes it VERY clear that he's expressing romantic feelings. in japanese you don't use a more serious word for love in that context; a love confession would usually use "suki."

so the most accurate way to translate it given the context is "love," but "like" is more technical--and the fact that they translate kaworu's suki as love and shinji's as like combined with the way spike spencer performs shinji's lines over the course of the episode? shows a deliberate attempt to make kaworu seem like the strange gay guy while keeping shinji's supposed straightness more intact.

now, in episode 25? shinji refers to kaworu "the person I loved" originally, and the dub just says "him."

actually, shinji and kaworu both use "dai suki" which makes it clear that that it's love that they're feeling. "suki" can mean love in some contexts but people would generally use "suki" for crushes and bffs and stuff.

there's really no excuse for the translators to ever use "like".

I just opened the episode to double-check, it's definitely "suki." even "dai suki" doesn't literally mean "love." There are tons of love confessions in anime that use "suki."

but no, I wasn't excusing them. if you know japanese well enough to translate it you should understand the context here enough to know "love" is the appropriate translation. using love in reference to kaworu saying it and like in reference to shinji saying it is a very obvious deliberate attempt to make shinji's feelings seem more ambiguous instead of obviously romantic.

i'm listening to it too and hearing "daisuki". it's more apparent when shinji says it. unless you're a native japanese speaker or something it's hard to tell either way.

but yeah. either way it's clear that "I liked him" is a deliberate mistranslation.

I know exactly which versions of which release of Eva you guys are referring to, lol god damn I'm a nerd. Anyway

Suki tte koto sa. ("I'm saying, I love you")

Kaworu-kun wa... suki da tte itte kureta nda. Boku no koto. Hajimete... hajimete hito kara suki da tte iwareta nda. Boku mo niite ita nda. Ayanami ni mo. Suki datta nda. (That long Shinji quote at the end of the episode)

There ain't a single daisuki in there bud!

And the translation that includes the "He looked like me" is not a good translation btw. The translation in that torrent is not very good.

Nevertheless it's clear from the context of the episode that they are talking about love and the changes that were intentionally made in the original release of Eva are pretty bad.

Not in this conversation, but can you recommend the best sub translation out there? I don't do torrents, so I'd prefer something that can be streamed online (KissAnime, etc).

Re: dddddddda

The two sub torrents that I know of are the original TV release and the director's cut.

For whatever reason, the only torrent I've found with the director's cut has that terrible "fansub English" translation that's too literal to the point of being inaccurate.

So, if you can find the original TV broadcast version, the translation for the subs in that is better. You won't have the benefit of the small extra scenes and changes in the director's cut, but it doesn't matter. The story in Eva is unintelligible no matter which version you're watching.

btw, the manga is superior to both the anime and the new movies. Read it.

"the manga is superior to both the anime and the new movies."

are you insane? i can understand manga > rebuild, but manga > anime?

Nope, not insane. It's called an opinion!

Actually I would say the manga has some serious advantages over the anime too, anon. The ending is much more clear for example, with explaining wtf is going on with Gendo's hand, what the deal was with Kaji, etc. And Shinji's relationship with Rei is better set up as well. Overall it's more of a conventional story, which is better for people who are less interested in the overly philosophical arthouse feeling that the anime has.

Manga Asuka isn't anywhere close to being as interesting, though. sadface.

anyway shouldn't someone start a thread under canon discussion if we're going to debate this

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
the ending is clearer but less powerful. sadamoto took the easy way out by letting shinji help asuka from the mp evas. shinji's relationship with rei is developed at the expense of asuka's. it's true that the manga has some highlights and explains characters that couldn't be explained in the anime but holistically it just falls flat.

sadamoto literally admits to not knowing how to write shinji lmfao so no the manga is not superior

Re: dddddddda

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It's far superior. What he doesn't know how to write is Anno's Shinji. Anno and Sadamoto are very, very different storytellers. That's why we have manga!Shinji instead, who is still a wonderful character. Just different.

But as far as the relevance of the manga goes for advice in playing Shinji, you're right, since he is so different. I recommend the manga as an aside.

i heard that it had shinji becoming a shonen hero to rescue a ganked, blushing asuka and that kaworu became gay because of being infected with femaleness

http://www.evacommentary.org/misc-files/transcripts_platinum_v3.zip

There's the script for the Platinum subs (with DC Scenes included), anon. They're the best sub translation out there. You'll have to download or torrent the Platinum subs from somewhere to watch it though.

KissAnime is fine to watch the DC Scenes, because I do think they're pretty important. Actually, there's nothing wrong with streaming the whole show there as long as you're comparing it with the Platinum script.

The version that has these subtitles for that line is the version with the crap translation.
