Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

You just admitted that you can see how some people wouldn't enjoy writing an essay for their personality section, though. I can knock out a 1000 word personality section for fun in less than half an hour for a character I don't actually intend to app, because writing that kind of thing is something I enjoy – that doesn't mean I'm more invested in my character or in the idea of playing at that game than someone for whom that would be a forbidding task. Not formatting it like an academic essay doesn't mean someone doesn't give a shit. Seriously, I really want to know where you mod so I can avoid ever apping somewhere run by someone with such a pointlessly snobby attitude.

tbh? this is true for me as well

especially if they have had a lot of ongoing threads that once involved boomerang tagging all night long, like OP's implying.

And people can and do easily get more in depth than that with lists, I've seen it done before on multiple occasions. You don't need an essay for what you're looking for here.

sure feels bad to constantly do other people's plurk memes (out of genuine interest) and never get any responses yourself

exactly, i figure they're already had plenty of attention from me. it won't kill them if i go boomerang someone else for a while.

looking forward to it

the mods seem very open to suggestions and critique, and it looks like they've put a lot of thought into keeping things fresh and less prone to sol

I'm just speaking from personal experience, and ime I've never seen it done in a way that didn't read as being horribly lazy. I believe you when you say you can do it and do it well because I have no reason not to, and that's fine, but I've never seen it.

For example, what I said in the comment upthread about people not going into detail about a way a character develops or grows from the start of their canon to their canon point. You say that you include that in your list apps, and that's perfect. That's exactly what I'm looking for. However, as far as my own playerbase is concerned, the people who have given me list apps have never done that. It has literally just been a list of traits with a brief reference back to a canon event that means nothing to me if I'm canonblind. I want the hows and whys in addition to the whos and whats.

To be clear, I don't want it specifically to be an essay. It's just that I've never gotten what I've wanted out of an app that wasn't one. That doesn't mean I never will. I just haven't so far.

circa the end of 3x09. general advice and then specifics on how he's changed would help me a lot, especially describing his brand of wit.

I'm told I'm doing well with him so far. but I tend to function almost entirely intuitively and am only taking in canon review and my understanding of him in a nebulous emotional way, and sometimes reading how others have put a character into words, into something solid and concrete, helps me a lot.

therefore, I'd be very grateful for any and all help :)

Freedom to Decide, from the Metal Gear Solid 2 OST. Specifically, this part on repeat.

i'm writing an app for a character from a huge canon and the app is getting so large even though i'm trimming all of the fat.

i know it wouldn't be nearly as big if i hadn't had to write out my own history section, since that's the majority of its length, but damn. i don't want the mods to have an "oh god why" moment when this shows up in their inbox.

I don't care if it's a gen game since there have been plenty of games that banned rape plots before.

I don't like it banned in sex games mostly because I play a creepy messed-up character who can skirt close to the dubcon line at times and what's banned is not always well-defined. I'm completely uninterested in rape plots but I don't want to have to worry about constantly policing what I'm writing in a hardcore d/s scene or whatever to make sure it doesn't sound too dubconny.

The biggest problem with trying to run a game where players can significantly affect things: players always complain they want their characters to be able to change the world but never want to accept any permanent negative consequences for their character's actions. Only the good, never the bad, and players also expect you to completely handhold them and lay out literally every single possible bad outcome, even if those outcomes are only maybes that MIGHT come ingame months down the road; if you're running a plot-heavy game with multiple subplot threads that can also be affected by the characters you sometimes CAN'T know ahead of time how it's all going to ultimately play out.

More than once players played twenty questions with me to blatantly try to metagame and infomod their way past their character suffering any negative repercussions for whatever they were plotting. I've also seen them get massively butthurt and ragequit plots because there was no way for them to magically go right back to playing house with the other half of their kawaii otp as if nothing had ever happened after it was over.

If players want characters to have the power to change the game they need to put on their big girl panties and actually accept the damn consequences to those changes. Your character might get injured, they might die, they might become wanted by local law enforcement, they might lose their house or their money or their powers or their weapons. Shit can happen if you decide to fuck with the powers that be and no you DON'T always know how things will shape up ahead of time.
