the fourth doctor

i love him and i've seen all of his serials but i feel like i'm undereducated because i haven't heard the radio stuff and his doctor is the only one i've seen all the episodes for so if i get even one thing wrong i'm fucked

I've played old who characters without reading/listening to any of the supplementary stuff and no one has ever given me any shit for it
in my exp classic who/extended universe who players know how ridiculous the canon is, and if you get into the point in a thread where they're asking for knowledge you don't have, you can just drop them a line in PM and tell them your deal and they'll probably walk you through things and tone down name/situation dropping in the future (at least this was my experience the one time i had to do it with the seventh doctor for a sixth doctor audios-only companion)

trust me even the doctor who writers got things wrong all the time, so if you say something off i doubt you'll even be called on it because it's essentially canon to be wrong about canon

Go for it, anon! I don't think anyone expects people to know every possible thing, not with a canon as sprawling and diverse as Doctor Who. From what I've seen, people are happy to fill each other in, or claim alternate universes.

It might be a good idea to acquaint yourself with the earlier Doctors, though.

dude, I'm Harryanon down there and go for it. nobody expects you to know EVERYTHING EVER cause Doctor Who is long and confusing and has waaay too much extra material and we could always use more Classic Who in dreamwidth.
