unless your family is literally forcing you at gunpoint to show up, you always have a choice

sometimes that choice involves choosing whether or not hearing about it months after the fact is worth showing up for two hours and breaking into the vodka stash as soon as you can manage, or listening to your dad threaten to disown you if you don't pretend to be a perfect child for them in front of your relatives, but you always have a choice

only someone who can't handle being responsible to making their own decisions would think otherwise

can i just tell the people whining about having to go to family things with people that aren't abusive/creepy (because i respect someone's right not to hang around toxic people) to shut the fuck up?

i have no family. i've spent all my holidays alone for over ten years. having to hear people whining about what presents they didn't get or how dare someone make them actually socialize makes me kind of want to punch you through the screen.

don't get me wrong, i hated a lot of my family when they were alive, but at least i had them. and if i didn't want to go to something, i had the option not to. but having no choice but to spend the holidays alone and then seeing a surprising amount of people on my timeline being upset that someone who loves them wants them to have fun with them for a few hours?
