It doesn't help that TVTropes categorizes EVERY LITTLE THING as a trope including "Hair Decorations," If they swear a lot, and if their names happen to mean something.

Whenever I see someone who describes their character using TVTropes terms, they usually end up being a boring person to thread with.

i got bullied out of the first lj/dwrp game i ever joined because i dared to disagree with one of the most popular players in the game a couple of times. because i was so new, i didn't even realize what was going on until i talked to a friend in another game and they clued me in.

yeah, but many of them grew up when computers weren't widespread or as convenient as today. you aren't the only ~old~ anon around either, so some anons' parents are around 50 years old.

I've been considering starting up a fantasy game here on Dreamwidth, but my experience in running this style of game has, thus far, been limited to forums. If any of you have any input on how to make a more smooth transition to comm-style RP for this, let me know!

It would mostly be open-world style. A "central" kingdom would be established as a starting basis, with characters beginning play in the capital city (in the application, they would be asked to detail how and why their character came to be there - Are they a traveling merchant there to peddle their wares? A would-be adventurer hoping to make it big in the king's army? A journeyman magician seeking to learn from the Wizard's Guild? - that sort of thing). Characters would be free to explore the city and the rest of the kingdom, and would have a large degree of control over what direction the plot takes. From month to month various things would be happening in different parts of the kingdom, and players could choose whether to investigate them or to strike out on their own - either way, they'd discover something which would steadily move them further along the plotline.

Player plots would be heavily encouraged (it's fantasy/D&D style, so people can take turns "DMing" their own quests if they want to, and the setting should be open enough that people can do what they want without locking other players into something they don't want to do) and would directly influence how the overarching plot goes. If players don't want to run their own quests, however, I'm thinking of having a dedicated team of "DMs" to run quests for the characters.

There would be a pantheon of "old gods" that could issue modplot-related quests to people who sign up for them, as well, if people prefer more of a push; otherwise players could write their own stories as they choose to.

I'm thinking of working in a class system as well; your standard wizard, sorcerer, ranger, rogue, warrior, paladin, etc... Players could propose their own classes in the app if nothing suited for their character already exists, but it would have to be approved; if it's too similar to an existing class they'd be assigned to the proper one upon acceptance. As time passes and the character picks up more skills, they could branch out to become a multiclass character or train for a "prestige class" or what-have-you.

In the interest of keeping things fair (and preventing powerplaying), a leveling system could also be implemented? I'm not sure how to work this with DWRP; in the forums I used to run, we had a code that granted experience and gold based on how many posts were being made/how long the posts were, and these points could be used to "purchase" items and skills that were displayed in the characters' profiles so no one could suddenly say "And then they used THIS spell that they've never mentioned before but is super effective against your character, I win!" But, it doesn't seem as though such a code would be possible for comm games. I'm thinking maybe a starting level would be assigned by the application team upon acceptance, as a way of putting characters from different canons on the same scale, and that more experience could be granted with each completed quest thread or thread where the character is making a concentrated effort at improving their skills - it's a little bit more modwork on our side, but it would make for an easier reference in the event that any disputes about who should be winning an encounter arise, and would reward people for not dropping their threads. It would also reward people for running their own plots because all the characters involved would earn EXP that way!

In the past I've done this style of RP with OCs created for the setting, but in this case I think making it an AU game could work. Players who chose to take up fandom characters would simply have to either come up with direct canon parallels (for example, Luke fon Fabre is the son of a duke of this kingdom rather than of Kimlasca, he got kidnapped by someone from a neighboring country, went through shitty things, became "Asch the Bloody" and is generally a douchebag), or put them in different situations that would have similar effects on their development growing up (he wasn't kidnapped! But he had to deal with a bunch of douchebag nobles so he just sort of grew up to be a douchebag himself, or he grew cold and cynical after serving in the country's military, whatever floats your boat and serves as justification for the behavior he'd be exhibiting).

Taking it a step further, the settings of some canons could lend themselves well to being "neighboring kingdoms" themselves, with minor tweaking - so perhaps the events of Tales of the Abyss took place on the continent of Auldrant far, far to the north of the kindgom where this RP would mostly be taking place. The problem with this is that it sort of locks people apping from a canon after the first one to choose it into whichever scenario the fist apper chooses. The solution for this being either communication or a willing suspension of disbelief. I'm not totally sold on including this, but it's an option, I guess.

Other canons (in futuristic settings, modern-day settings, etc) would definitely have to be AU'd, but if they don't want to be native to the kingdom they can just be from "far-off kingdoms" as well and be foreigners.

I've got a lot of ideas and I know not all of them will work for this style of RP! Any thoughts/sugggestions, anons?
