This is a late reply, but I think the above anon got it right, the most important thing is, first of all, checking with your castmates!

Personally, I prefer Yu Narukami (see this username having a pun based on it) and even wrote his application with that, but I asked my castmates in Asgard what they'd like out of both when I got accepted. Souji won out (I also even jokingly suggested Charlie). Since you're going to be heavily interacting with your teammates anyway, it's best to see how they feel first and go with the majority or pick what you want when they don't seem to have a preference.

Either way, I'm pretty sure your castmates would enjoy the early heads up, and the time you took into contacting them in the fist place. If you're the only cast member there, then you get free reign!

I also personally have not seen anyone who stopped interacting with Yu/Souji just based on a name so you're safe there too.

Edit: As a note, most of the protags have two names anyway; the P1 hero has Yuuya Narumi from the drama CDs and Naoya Toudou from the manga, P3 has Minato from the manga and Makoto due to the movie now. It really depends on the player's preference.

If it helps, I've only started to play him last month so I know how that feels. I usually play Naoto or Kanji as far as the P4 cast goes.

The manga calls him Souji Seta as someone mentioned above, and was for the longest time the single name we had until the anime came out. that's possibly why some people have strong options about it, because for nearly five years, that's the most 'canon' name we had. And then for the anime, they picked out Yu's apparently out of a hat with a bunch of approved Atlus names they could use.

All of the club books which are sort of giant encyclopedias with additional Persona information call him Hero and don't give him a canon name nor canon birthday (the only one who do are Tatsuya and Maya from Persona 2's dual games). Even the Golden intro and the Golden club book call him as such. However, the Arena book calls him Yu Narukami.

I am not 100% sure on this but I believe the P4 drama CDs has everyone calling him partner, friend, senpai etc, basically they do the game thing of avoiding to call him by name. Only the anime drama cDs call him by name, and when it's back to the 2 golden CDs they go back to not using his name at all.

TLDR: Even the material is all over the place, so let your heart (and, perhaps, with the aid of your castmates) decide.
