Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

The move was good in retrospect, but that drama was incredibly stupid. And the way that one dude got demonized, igrick or something. That was ridiculous.

igrick openly mocked users in Russian, thinking no one would be smart enough to translate or be bilingual.

Supposedly Russian LJ users hated his changes just as much as everyone else.

those fucking default colors

I think DW is a better site, but the move wasn't good for the rp community. LJ had a social and fandom base that we've never replicated here. Yes, LJ was in a slow decline long before the move, but it had a large number of users and it still offered (IMHO) a better, more navigable blogging service than Tumblr. The mass exodus of rpers decimated communities and made social networks suddenly fall apart, so even more people left.

I know I'm in he minority on this, but I didn't think the redesign was that bad. It was handled badly with poor communication, but the technical glitches were the sort of thing you expect during a major overhaul of a site. I think the people losing their shit over migraines were succumbing to mass hysteria and psychosomatic illness. LJ was dated, both in appearance and functionality, and it was losing users to cleaner-looking sites. Unfortunately, DW looks even more amateurish. As for Igrick, yeah, he was unprofessional, but people in LJ news posts were calling for his head and the whole thing got incredibly stupid.

i actually still get migraines when i go to lj to read old threads, and we're long past the point of hysteria.

but i do agree with you that the move was bad for the community. goddamn it i just wish the redesign had never happened.

Well, you might be one of those people who's especially sensitive to that kind of thing, but the panic over it had all the marks of hysteria. If you tell people that something is likely to give them a headache (or hives, or nausea, etc.), a significant number of normal, healthy people are going to develop headaches. But it's pure placebo effect.

Remember when Google added that narrow black bar to the top of their search page for a while, and the internet collectively lost its shit? I saw people claiming that that was giving them headaches and that Google was ruined forever. It really took me back to that old LJ wank...

The redesign should have been rolled out with an option for a "classic view" or something like that - I think they eventually did enable that feature, actually, but it was a "too little, too late" kind of thing. It could have been handled so much better.

Not psychosomatic. I'm just really sensitive to migraines.

Ticks me off when I see people dismissing everyone who had a migraine triggered by lj's shit design.

it disconnected me from connecting with a journal. i use to have my little personal lj and have so many 'lj friends'. all my bullshit was solely on lj but then when the exodus happened i think everyone just kinda fell apart.

people relied on plurk for communication and primarily turned their blogging/fandom side to tumblr.

i don't miss it, per say, but i miss being able to find anything i need in a fandom community as opposed to scrounging through tumblr.

gonna disagree with you on the point that the technical glitches were expected for a major site overhaul. at the time, LJ had been having issues for ages before the overhaul (varnish errors, anyone?) and after, there was a whole swath of members in my game who had to go on hiatus because they couldn't access the site.

as someone who works for a software company that manages websites and just did a major overhaul for all of them, that's the kind of shit that should be fixed in hours, not weeks. you can talk all you want about social media and updating the appearance, but if the site isn't accessible it's dead in the water.

LJ was dated, both in appearance and functionality, and it was losing users to cleaner-looking sites.

Look, I don't know about y'all, but even now when I go to LJ to find layouts to use because DW's layout choices are sorely lacking, in general it takes me anywhere from 15-30 seconds to load the comments section to posts. Even posts with like 3 or 4 comments total.

If you don't think that's egregiously dated in functionality, I don't know what to tell you.

I have an older computer because I can't afford to upgrade it right now and LJ is literally unusable for me now because it takes so long to load comments, even if there are only a few of them like you said.
