books-- fun and punchy fantasy (not picky about what kind, steampunk, mythpunk, urban whatever). can be tropey or cliche, as long as they play around with it

music-- dramatic and ethereal sort of stuff. i like austra, grimes, within temptation

The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N K Jemisin

I read it in one sitting and adored it. Political intrigue, lots of gods messing around, great worldbuilding, kickass heroine. I wouldn't even say it's tropey - a lot of it felt really fresh and interesting to me, and I read SFF primarily. The sequels are great too but the first one is pretty self-contained.

sunshine by robin mckinley is one book i consistently recommend as 'fun' (the way it's told, more than anything funny happens)

-first-person novel dealing with vampires, the tone isn't for everyone but it's not awful
-acknowledges that vampires are creepy as fuck, no over-romanticizing or swooning descriptions here
-heroine with actual guts and gets shit done
-has an interesting worldbuild that i'm so buttmad we only get a glimpse of

http://www.amazon.com/Sunshine-Robin-McKinley/dp/0515138819

technically pre-dates twilight, if that sort of thing matters to you

Games!

I'm interested in point-and-click games the most, bonus points if they're horror/mystery/drama types. I don't mind lots of dialogue or cutscenes in it or needing to walk around for thirty minutes to solve one puzzle since I like exploring things.

Games I've enjoyed are the Blackwell Games, The Shiva, The Last Door, Nick Bounty and the Cat Lady.

i bet you've already played these or heard of them or i dunno so i'm sorry in advance but i'd recommend the zero escape series(999 and virtue's last reward) and the ace attorney series. both of them have some ports to iphone, with their other games being on ds and 3ds. the ds games you can emulate on the computer but ya gotta buy the 3ds ones!

also if this isn't anything NEAR what you're looking for i apologize... but they are good games!

if these are your kind of thing then i cant recommend ghost trick hard enough! its by the makers of phoenix wright, with a very different set of game mechanics but the same sense of humour its one of my favourite games ever

+100

Seriously, based on what you're looking for, Ghost Trick hits all these marks. It's a murder mystery with great puzzle mechanics (which kind of include point and click mechanics), but what makes it amazing are these three things, I think:

- the art direction and visual style (all the characters are rotoscoped animation 3D models, and it looks like no other game you've seen, check out a sample over here: http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lwet95Oood1r41rdz.gif)
- the characters (all of which are very memorable, quirky, and even rather complex at times)
- the storyline (which is told through the time period of one night, and has some plot twists that will seriously surprise you, if there's one game I would recommend never to be spoiled by, it's this game)

The music is also really good, and overall it's a wonderful gem that I think would be right up your alley. :)

Princes and princesses, happy endings, possession/corruption or hypnosis causing conflict, "girly things," stories that minimize/leave out the romance angle, necromancy, psychological horror. Female characters who are more than plot devices are a must.

My favorites are Adventure Time, Princess Tutu, The Old Kingdom series, Silent Hill, and RGU. Any form of media is great! I'm currently enjoying Star Stealing Prince thanks to an anon here.

seconding request for woman-focused things sans romance

Re: RECOMMEND ME A THING

magical girl genre will be your friend, however there is a LOT of romance in the genre which is tough. i always tend to shrug and get through it because kick ass girls in cute costumes.

i think you'd REALLY enjoy revolutionary girl utena if you haven't seen it as it is a series that plays with both the magical girl genre and the shoujo genre, playing around with what's typical for women etcc. it can be considered a darker magical girl, however it's still pretty light and has it humor. it also has a happy ending! it has a huge focus on the idea of princes, princesses, castles, witches, all that, but it does take place in a school. basically powerful girls beating up guys and deciding they don't need princes to save them and joining together!! there is romance however it's played with in a good way and what's considered end game is a girl/girl relationship which is yknow cool!! still it's very ambiguous.

while not exactly a princess story i think you'd enjoy kuragehime or jellyfish princess which does have some romance in it but again played with and the story is so wonderful it's fine!! big female cast, main female character, very fun.

one last suggestion is little witch academia which again isn't princesses, but witches and castles!! kinda has a bit of a harry potter feel except hogwarts is all awesome girls with a ton more variety than that french place. there are barely any boys in the film. all girls all the time. girls who fight, girls who work together, girls who teach, we got it all. there is no romance but some people like a girl/girl relationship in the series but really it's not canon so!

sorry it's all animanga heh but that's what i know! i have a friend with EXTREMELY similar interests to you so i basically did what i knew she liked/would like... like she prefers no romance but still really enjoyed kuragehime! hope this helps a little?

I've seen and loved Little Witch Academia and Revolutionary Girl Utena! That's what I meant by RGU! xD

I'll try Princess Jellyfish for sure! Maybe Mawaru Penguindrum and stuff, I know the person who did RGU did that.

Thanks so much! \o

Anime/books: The Twelve Kingdoms - Beautiful anime with a unique story. The anime follows two teenaged girls who wind up in an alternate magical universe that's based on ancient China. There's magic, other sentients, kirin, etc. Not so much the psych horror, though.
Fiction: Curse of Chalion and Paladin of Souls by Louis McMaster Bujold - These are two of the best books I've ever read. The females are secondary characters in the first story (but it's sooooo good). If you like those, give Bujold's SF a try. She's excellent.
Anime/Manga: Ghost Hunt - I really love this one for the horror stories. The second to last story in the anime is the best IMO.
If you like horror games, have you played Ib or Corpse Party or The Witch's House?

puzzle games!

preferably on a portable console but anything is good

I like things that have some challenge to them but make logical sense, I'd prefer something with a bit of a story but don't mind if it's the "here's a world now solve this shit" type

I recently finished FEZ and enjoyed the hell out of it and also like LIMBO and braid so anything like that would be great

have you played scribblenauts? it's a very out of the box type of puzzle game and it has infinite solutions to its puzzles so tons of replay value! plus there are a lot of games and even a dc comics spinoff! it's on ds and 3ds so totally portable!

the later games have more of a story, but as someone who typically doesn't play puzzle games and who plays things for stories i never minded the earlier games just because they were SO good.

if you've never heard of them or played them the basics of scribblenauts is that anything you can write you can create. it boasts a huge dictionary of words, that expands with each new game and with newer games using adjectives too. the dc game obviously uses words from the dc universe heh. an ordinary puzzle would be you have something stuck in a tree and you need to get it. well you could type axe and cut the tree down. you could write a ladder and climb up and get it. you could give yourself wings and FLY up and get it. or you could even add an adjective to the tree and make it a "tiny tree" making it easier for you to reach the object. they have lots of goofy and fun puzzles that are so different from this too and really, it's one of my favorite series of all time!!

if you haven't already played the professor layton series, i definitely recommend it. i love the story and characters as much as the puzzles, and there's a huge variety in the types of puzzles you can solve.

four of the games are on ds, and the fifth, sixth and a crossover with phoenix wright are on the 3ds, though the latter two haven't come out yet (in the us at least).

i really really really want to read josei/shoujo manga

must have:
- multiple female characters
- the other female characters are also acknowledged/have ships/lives/etc (so no sailor moon, i just don't want everything to be about usagi)
- the main character not be a harem/cute girl that's meant for self-insert
- or airheaded, klutzy, loves to cook!!! tee hee
- preferably older characters, actually!
- but the big problem i'm having is finding something without subtle misogyny/cliche female roles, especially in terms of japanese female stereotypes

i'd really like something fantasy, superhero/mahou shoujo, etc.

if it's a drama and will punch me in the heart repeatedly, i'd love this

video games that also fit the bill would be gr8

also i didn't really care for madoka and the art is a big turn-off. i understand that some people can get past it or like it, but i just couldn't.

and i prefer manga to anime, but anything i could easily find (or is on netflix) would be awesome!

i dont know how up your alley it would be but i love full moon wo sagashite which is about a girl who wants to be an idol, its really touching and has a few supernatural elements. the only reason that im worried that it might not fit the bill is that the other female characters dont have too much going on but what is there for them is really good

its not that long - seven volumes, i never finished the anime but ive heard that its good as well

i loved it and cried forever

thank you for reminding me about it, anon!

i only put multiple in because i didn't want haremesque titles (although i also enjoyed pretear?)
